Biography

Short Description

Teresa Eustochio Verzeri was born Ignazia Verzeri on 31 July 1801 in Bergamo, in northern Italy, the daughter of Antonio Verzeri and Countess Elena Pedrocca-Grumelli. She came from a large, aristocratic, and devout Catholic family; one of her brothers, Girolamo Verzeri, later became Bishop of Brescia. In her youth she received a careful Christian and humanistic education and spent a formative period with the Benedictine nuns of the monastery of Santa Grata in Bergamo. Although drawn to the cloister, she did not make final profession as a Benedictine. Under the spiritual direction of Canon Giuseppe Benaglio, a leading priest of the Diocese of Bergamo, she discerned a vocation to found an apostolic congregation devoted to the education of girls and to works of charity.

Together with Benaglio she established the Institute of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Bergamo on 8 February 1831. The community took as its charism devotion to the Heart of Jesus and the Christian education of young women, especially those of modest means, together with other charitable works. She took the religious name Teresa Eustochio, drafted the institute’s constitutions, and served as its first superior, forming the early sisters in a spirituality of trust in providence, humility, and practical service. After Benaglio’s death in the 1830s she bore sole responsibility for the young congregation, opening further houses in northern Italy, including in Brescia and in the Trentino, despite limited resources and the unsettled politics of Restoration and Risorgimento Italy.

In letters and instructions to her sisters she insisted on union with the Sacred Heart, on teaching as a form of evangelization, and on care for the poor and the sick. Those writings later became a principal source for the congregation’s identity. She spent her last years partly in Brescia, where her brother had been named bishop, and continued to govern the institute amid declining health. She died in Brescia on 3 March 1852. Her remains were later placed in the chapel of the Institute of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Bergamo.

Her reputation for holiness led to the introduction of her cause. Pope Pius XII beatified her on 27 October 1946, and Pope John Paul II canonized her on 10 June 2001. The Catholic Church commemorates her on 3 March. The congregation she founded continues educational and charitable work in Italy and elsewhere, preserving her emphasis on the Sacred Heart and on the Christian formation of youth.
