Biography

Short Description

Teresa Fardella de Blasi was born on 24 May 1867 in New York to the Sicilian noble Fardella family of Trapani. Her father was then living in the United States in a consular capacity for Italy. While she was still a child the family returned to western Sicily, and she was raised in Trapani in a devout Catholic household of the local aristocracy. In 1888 she married the lawyer Giovanni de Blasi. She undertook the ordinary duties of a wife and mother in Trapani while remaining closely attached to the Church and to practical works of mercy among the poor of the city.

Late nineteenth-century Trapani, like much of Sicily after Italian unification, was marked by poverty and by limited educational opportunities for girls of humble condition. Teresa visited the sick, aided abandoned or impoverished young women, and supported catechesis. From this apostolate she founded in Trapani the congregation of the Povere Figlie della Madonna Incoronata (Poor Daughters of Our Lady Crowned), taking the title from a local Marian devotion. The sisters devoted themselves to sheltering, educating, and giving Christian and practical formation to needy girls. She thus became a foundress while remaining a married woman rooted in family life and in the civic and religious world of her diocese.

Personal trials, including family bereavements, were received by her in a spirit of faith. After she was widowed she gave herself still more fully to the religious family she had established and to charitable work in the diocese of Trapani, remaining active into old age. She was known among contemporaries for piety, perseverance, and concrete service to the poor. Teresa Fardella de Blasi died in Trapani on 26 March 1957.

The Catholic Church later opened her cause of beatification, and she is therefore honored as a Servant of God. She has not been beatified or canonized and remains little known outside Italy. Within Sicily, especially in Trapani, her memory is preserved by the congregation she founded and by those who regard her as an example of holiness lived in marriage, motherhood, and care for the poor. Her life belongs to the wider current of Italian Catholic women of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who joined family vocation with the foundation of teaching and charitable institutes.
