Biography

Short Description

Teresa Gallifa i Palmarola was a Catalan Catholic religious foundress of the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She was born in 1850 in Vic, in the Osona district of Catalonia, then as now part of Spain. Surviving notices of her life, which are relatively brief even in Catalan reference works, present her as coming from a modest background and as having trained and worked as a midwife (llevadora). That professional formation, rather than a long documented monastic youth, is the element that later shaped both her personal apostolate and the congregation she established. In adulthood she lived and worked in Barcelona, a rapidly growing industrial city whose poorer districts offered little medical or social support to women in pregnancy and childbirth.

In Barcelona she encountered the hardship of poor, abandoned, or otherwise unsupported women at the time of delivery, and of infants left without care. Catholic charitable practice in Catalonia in that period often joined a strong Passion-centred piety with concrete works of mercy; Gallifa’s response was to gather companions for the assistance of expectant and labouring mothers, especially those without means. In 1886 she founded in Barcelona the Congregació de Germanes Sierves de la Passió (Congregation of the Sisters Servants of the Passion; in Spanish, Hermanas Siervas de la Pasión). The title expressed a spirituality that related the suffering of women in childbirth and of mothers in distress to the Passion of Christ. The sisters undertook midwifery, shelter, and material and spiritual care for pregnant women, parturients, and their children, with particular attention to the poor and to women in irregular or abandoned situations.

The new institute belonged to the large family of nineteenth-century female congregations that combined vows and common life with specialised social and medical work, in this case maternity and infant care rather than teaching or general hospital nursing. Gallifa is consistently described in Catalan sources as a religiosa and as foundress and head of this community. There is no reliable published evidence that she married or that she had children; her public identity is that of a celibate foundress of a congregation of sisters. She remained in Barcelona, directing the work she had begun, until her death there in 1907.

After her death the Sierves de la Passió continued as a relatively small congregation dedicated to maternal and infant assistance, chiefly in Spain. Widely available historical and encyclopedic accounts do not record a completed beatification or canonization, an assigned feast day, or a list of patronages, nor do they give a verified burial site beyond her death in Barcelona. She is remembered in Catalan Catholic and regional historiography primarily as the midwife-foundress who turned professional skill and a Passion spirituality toward women and children at the margins of urban society in late nineteenth-century Catalonia.
