Biography

Short Description

Teresa Janina Kierocińska was born Janina Kierocińska on 14 June 1885 in Wieluń, in the historic Polish lands then administered as Congress Poland within the Russian Empire. She grew up in a practicing Catholic family and from childhood showed an inclination toward prayer and charity. In her youth she experienced a call to consecrated life and was drawn especially to Discalced Carmelite spirituality, with its emphasis on interior prayer and devotion to the Child Jesus and Saint Joseph. Family circumstances and the limited presence of active Carmelite communities for women in the Russian partition delayed a formal entry into religious life. She bound herself nonetheless to the Carmelite tradition as a member of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites and waited for a way to live that charism in an apostolic rather than strictly cloistered form.

After Poland regained independence, that opportunity came. In 1921, together with the Discalced Carmelite priest Anzelm Gądek, she founded the Congregation of the Carmelite Sisters of the Child Jesus, an institute combining Carmelite contemplative spirituality with active service among the working class. She took the religious name Teresa of Saint Joseph and became the community’s first superior. The sisters organized first in Kraków and soon established their principal house in Sosnowiec, in the industrial Dąbrowa Basin (Zagłębie Dąbrowskie), a coal-mining and factory district whose laborers and children lived in harsh conditions. Under her leadership the congregation opened orphanages, kindergartens, and other works of education and relief. She became popularly known as the Mother of Zagłębie for her identification with the poor of that region. The congregation’s way of life joined regular prayer, including Carmelite contemplative practice, to long hours of practical service.

The German occupation of Poland during the Second World War placed the community under severe strain. Mother Teresa kept the houses functioning as far as possible, organizing food, shelter, and pastoral care for those displaced or impoverished by the war. Later testimony credits the sisters with assisting people in danger, including Jews, though the full extent of such aid is known mainly through that later record. After 1945, with the imposition of a communist government hostile to independent religious institutions, she continued to govern the congregation until illness overtook her. She died in Sosnowiec on 12 July 1946.

A reputation for holiness persisted in the region and among her sisters, and a cause for beatification was introduced. After examination of her life she was declared Venerable. A miracle attributed to her intercession was subsequently recognized, and she was beatified on 11 June 2022 in Sosnowiec; Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, presided in the name of Pope Francis. Her liturgical commemoration is observed on 12 July. The congregation she founded remains active, and her tomb at the Sosnowiec motherhouse is a place of local pilgrimage.
