Biography

Teresa Adelaide Cesina Manetti was born on 2 March 1846 in Campi Bisenzio, a town near Florence in Tuscany, then belonging to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. She was the daughter of Raffaello Manetti and Rosa Bigagli. Her father died when she was three years old, and the family thereafter lived in modest circumstances. She received little formal schooling but was raised in a devout Catholic household. From childhood she showed a marked piety and a strong attraction to Carmelite spirituality, especially the life and teaching of Saint Teresa of Avila, whose emphasis on interior prayer and reform of religious life would shape her vocation.

In her early adulthood in Campi Bisenzio she gathered companions who wished to combine a life of prayer with practical care for poor and neglected girls. She became a member of the Third Order of Carmel. In 1874 she and her first sisters began a more formal common life, took the Carmelite habit, and dedicated themselves to the education and protection of girls who lacked family support or schooling. She assumed the religious name Teresa Maria of the Cross. This community developed into the Congregation of the Carmelite Sisters of Saint Teresa (Suore Carmelitane di Santa Teresa), an institute that united Carmelite contemplative prayer with an active apostolate of teaching and social assistance. The foundation received the support of ecclesiastical authorities in the Archdiocese of Florence and later further canonical recognition.

As foundress and superior she guided the congregation through poverty, local difficulties, and the ordinary trials of establishing a new religious family in late nineteenth-century Italy. The sisters opened schools and houses for girls in Tuscany and elsewhere. Her spiritual counsel stressed trust in divine providence, devotion to the Eucharist and to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and fidelity to the spirit of Saint Teresa of Avila. She was remembered by her sisters for humility, patience in sickness, and perseverance. In her later years her health declined, but she continued to govern the institute and to form its members until the end of her life.

Teresa Maria Manetti died on 23 April 1910 at Campi Bisenzio, at the age of sixty-four. A reputation for holiness attached to her memory in her congregation and native town. After the usual canonical process, Pope John Paul II beatified her on 19 October 1986. She is venerated as Blessed Teresa Maria of the Cross; her liturgical memorial is kept on 23 April. She has not been canonized. The Carmelite Sisters of Saint Teresa continue their work in education and pastoral care, regarding her as their foundress.
