Biography

Short Description

Teresa Toda i Juncosa was a nineteenth-century Catalan Catholic foundress, born in 1826 in the village of Riudecanyes in the Baix Camp of the province of Tarragona, in Catalonia, then as now part of Spain. She came from a modest rural background in a period marked by the aftermath of the Napoleonic occupation, the liberal-absolutist struggles of the reign of Ferdinand VII, and the Carlist wars that repeatedly disturbed Catalonia during her youth. In adulthood she married a man of the Guasch family and became the mother of at least one daughter, Teresa Guasch i Toda, who would later share her religious vocation and is remembered as co-foundress of the same institute. Left a widow, Toda had to support herself and her child in the difficult social and economic conditions of mid-nineteenth-century Catalonia, where industrialization was transforming Barcelona and the coastal towns while rural poverty and urban abandonment of children remained widespread.

Drawn to a life of prayer and service, and formed by the Carmelite and Teresian tradition associated with Saint Teresa of Ávila together with a strong devotion to Saint Joseph, she conceived a religious family that would join an interior life of Carmelite inspiration to active works of charity. Together with her daughter she founded, in 1878, the Congregation of the Teresian Carmelite Sisters of Saint Joseph (Congregació de Germanes Carmelites Tereses de Sant Josep; Hermanas Carmelitas Teresas de San José). The foundation belongs to the large wave of new apostolic congregations of women that arose in Spain in the decades after the exclaustration and disentailment of the 1830s, when many older monastic houses had been suppressed and the education of poor girls, the care of orphans, and nursing of the sick were increasingly taken up by newly founded sisterhoods under diocesan and later pontifical approval. The community devoted itself especially to the education and protection of girls, including orphans and children of poor families, and to related works of mercy.

Toda served as the first superior of the institute and formed its early members in simplicity, trust in providence, and fidelity to the Church. The congregation took root in Catalonia in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, establishing houses and schools, with Barcelona as a principal centre of its activity. She spent her later years in that city and died there in 1898. After her death her daughter Teresa Guasch i Toda continued the government and expansion of the congregation. In the twentieth century the Teresian Carmelite Sisters of Saint Joseph spread beyond Catalonia to other parts of Spain and to missions in Latin America, Africa, and elsewhere, remaining an active apostolic institute of Carmelite spirituality rather than a cloistered branch of the ancient Carmelite orders.

Teresa Toda i Juncosa is remembered in congregational and regional Catalan Catholic memory as a widow, mother, and foundress who turned personal hardship into a lasting work of education and charity. She held no episcopal or papal office. She has not been canonized, and no universally assigned feast day or widely documented list of patronages is attached to her name in the general liturgical books of the Catholic Church. Independent scholarly literature on her inner life, the precise circumstances of her marriage, and many details of her childhood remains limited; the most secure outline of her career rests on the history of the congregation she founded and on standard Catalan biographical notices of nineteenth-century religious foundresses.
