Biography

Short Description

Tertullinus was a priest of the Church of Rome commemorated as a martyr in the ancient Roman tradition. He is associated with the persecution of Christians under the emperor Valerian in the mid-third century, a period when imperial edicts first targeted the clergy and forbade Christian assembly, and then, in a second phase, prescribed capital punishment for bishops, priests, and deacons who refused to sacrifice. Almost nothing about his life can be established from contemporary documents. His name and cult rest on later martyrological notices, above all the entry in the Roman Martyrology, and on a passio of uncertain date whose narrative belongs to the type of Roman gesta martyrum composed or elaborated from the fifth century onward rather than to an eyewitness record.

Traditional hagiography states that Tertullinus was ordained to the priesthood by Pope Stephen I, whose pontificate ended in 257, the same year commonly assigned to the martyr’s death. In that setting he is said to have exercised ministry in Rome and to have converted pagans until he was arrested. The later legendary acts describe a sequence of tortures: beating with rods, burning of the sides, the breaking of the mouth with a stone, clubbing, and stretching on the rack, followed by beheading. The Roman Martyrology locates his heavenly birthday—that is, the day of his death—at Rome on the Via Latina, which in this literature ordinarily indicates both the place of execution and the area of burial along that road south of the city.

Historians of early Christian Rome treat the elaborate torture catalogue as literary convention rather than recoverable fact. Similar dossiers were produced for many Roman martyrs whose names survived in local calendars but whose authentic acts had been lost. The association of a priest-martyr named Tertullinus with the Via Latina is nonetheless consistent with the topography of third-century Roman commemorations, and the assignment of his death to Valerian’s reign coheres with the well-attested attack on the Roman clergy in 257–258, which also claimed Pope Sixtus II and the deacon Lawrence. No independent inscription, cemetery itinerary, or fourth-century source confirms further biographical detail.

His feast has been kept on 4 August. He was never the object of a formal papal canonization in the later medieval or Tridentine sense; his cult is of the ancient, so-called pre-congregation kind, that is, continuous liturgical veneration of a martyr from late antiquity. No reliable information survives concerning his birthplace, family, or whether he was married, a state still possible for Roman clergy in the third century before later discipline of celibacy. He held neither the papacy nor a patriarchal see, and he belonged to no religious order, monastic communities of that kind not yet existing in the West. Specific patronages of places, professions, or causes are not recorded in the principal hagiographical collections, and claims about the later translation of relics to particular churches cannot be verified from early sources.
