Biography

Short Description

Thalassius of Libya, also called Thalassius the Libyan, was a Christian monk, priest, and hegumen (abbot) of the seventh century. He is known from his own spiritual writings and from the large exegetical work that Saint Maximus the Confessor addressed to him. Almost nothing can be verified about his family, place of birth, or the exact years of his life. He is associated with a monastery in the Libyan desert of Byzantine North Africa and belongs to the Chalcedonian monastic tradition of that region. His activity falls in the first half of the seventh century, overlapping the career of Maximus (c. 580–662), including the years when Maximus resided in Africa after leaving Constantinople.

Thalassius composed four “centuries,” collections of one hundred short chapters each, on love, self-control, and life according to the intellect. The chapters stand in the Evagrian and desert-father tradition: they treat the purification of the passions, the acquisition of the virtues, watchfulness of the mind, and progress toward contemplation of God. These texts were later included in the Philokalia, the anthology of Eastern Orthodox spiritual writings assembled in the eighteenth century by Nicodemus the Hagiorite and Macarius of Corinth, and they remained part of Byzantine and later Orthodox monastic reading.

His learning and standing are further shown by Maximus the Confessor’s Quaestiones ad Thalassium (Questions to Thalassius). In that work Maximus answers sixty-five questions that Thalassius had raised about difficult passages of Scripture, especially from the Old Testament. The exchange implies a correspondence between two educated monks and is generally placed in the 630s, while Maximus was in North Africa. The period was already marked by the Persian occupation of Egypt and the first Arab conquests; the later fate of Thalassius’s community after the Muslim takeover of Libya and Cyrenaica is not recorded in surviving sources.

No detailed contemporary vita of Thalassius has been preserved. He is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church and is commemorated on 20 May in a number of Orthodox calendars. Western martyrologies and Latin hagiography take little notice of him. His historical importance rests on the transmission of desert spirituality through his centuries and on the stimulus he gave to one of the major theological works of seventh-century Byzantium, rather than on a documented public career or a cycle of miracles.
