Biography

Short Description

Saint Thecla (also Thekla) is among the most widely venerated female saints of early Christianity. Almost everything that can be said of her life derives from the Acts of Paul and Thecla, a Greek apocryphal narrative probably composed in Asia Minor in the second century. In that account she is a young woman of a prominent family in Iconium, a city of Lycaonia in the Roman province of Galatia (the site of modern Konya). Sitting at a window she hears the Apostle Paul preach on continence, resurrection, and the Christian way of life, is converted, and refuses to marry her fiancé Thamyris. Her mother Theocleia and the civic authorities oppose her. Condemned to death by fire, she is delivered when a sudden storm quenches the pyre. She then leaves Iconium to follow Paul.

At Antioch, commonly identified as Pisidian Antioch, a high-ranking Syrian named Alexander tries to take her. She resists him in public and is condemned to the wild beasts. The narrative describes a sequence of marvels in the arena: a lioness defends her; women in the crowd, including a queen named Tryphaena, support her; and Thecla, seeing a pit of water, throws herself in and baptizes herself in the name of Jesus Christ, emerging unharmed. After her release she puts on male clothing and rejoins Paul, who charges her to go and teach the word of God. She is said to have returned briefly to Iconium and then to have settled near Seleucia in Isauria (Seleucia ad Calycadnum, modern Silifke), living as an ascetic in a cave, instructing many, and working healings. Later recensions add that in extreme old age, when men came to seize or defile her, the rock opened and she vanished into it, or that she died in peace after a long eremitical life. Throughout the tradition she remains unmarried and childless, a consecrated virgin rather than a wife or mother.

The historical value of this story is limited. Tertullian, writing around the year 200, already knew the Acts of Paul, attributed them to a presbyter in Asia who had composed them out of love for Paul and who was deposed for the imposture, and objected in particular to the use of Thecla’s example to authorize women to teach and to baptize. Modern scholarship generally treats the work as second-century Christian fiction, possibly reflecting debates about asceticism, women’s ministry, and apostolic authority, rather than as a reliable record of first-century events. No independent first-century evidence confirms Thecla’s existence, and no verified year of birth or death is known. Nonetheless, by the fourth century her cult was firmly established. A great shrine, Hagia Thekla (today Ayatekla or Meriamlik), stood a short distance south of Seleucia. The pilgrim Egeria visited it in the 380s; Gregory of Nazianzus withdrew there; Evagrius Scholasticus and other late antique authors mention it; and archaeology has revealed a large basilica and associated buildings, indicating a major pilgrimage centre. In Eastern tradition she received the title Equal to the Apostles and was invoked as a proto-martyr among women and as a model of consecrated virginity. A further shrine and convent associated with her name exist at Maaloula in Syria, attesting to the geographic spread of the cult.

Thecla’s feast is entered on 23 September in the Roman Martyrology; the Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches keep her memory on 24 September, and she appears in other calendars on further dates. She is the patron saint of Tarragona in Catalonia, whose cathedral is dedicated to her and whose festival of Santa Tecla remains a principal civic and religious celebration, and she is also venerated at Sitges. She was not canonized by any later papal process; her cult is of ancient, pre-congregational origin. In the calendar reform of 1969 her feast was omitted from the General Roman Calendar because of the legendary character of the Acts, but she was retained in the Martyrology and continues to be widely commemorated in the Christian East and in local Western devotion.
