Biography

Short Description

Æthelberht (also spelled Ethelbert or Aethelberht) was king of Kent in the late sixth and early seventh centuries and the first Anglo-Saxon ruler known to have received Christian baptism. He belonged to the Oiscinga dynasty, which claimed descent from the legendary Hengist, and was the son of King Eormenric. No contemporary source records his year of birth. Bede states that he reigned fifty-six years, which would place his accession around 560, but many modern historians consider that figure too long and prefer an accession in the 580s or about 589. Kent in his time was a prosperous coastal kingdom with close commercial and diplomatic ties to the Frankish realms across the Channel, a connection that shaped both his marriage and the later Gregorian mission.

His marriage to Bertha, a Christian princess and daughter of the Merovingian king Charibert I of Paris, was of lasting importance. Bertha brought with her Bishop Liudhard, who served at St Martin's church in Canterbury, a building of Roman origin. In 597 a mission sent by Pope Gregory the Great and led by Augustine landed on the Isle of Thanet. Bede relates that Æthelberht received the missionaries in the open air, lest they practise magic, then allowed them to settle in Canterbury and to preach. He was himself baptized, according to tradition in 597, though he did not compel his subjects to convert. He granted the mission land, protection, and the means to restore a Roman church as Christ Church cathedral and to found a monastery outside the walls.

Æthelberht issued a law code that is the earliest substantial text in Old English and the oldest written Germanic law. It protects church property and clergy and sets out tariffs of compensation for injury and theft. Bede lists him among the kings who held imperium over other English rulers south of the Humber. He founded the church of the Apostles Peter and Paul outside Canterbury, later known as St Augustine's Abbey, as a burial church for Kentish kings and archbishops. He died on 24 February 616 and was buried in the porch of that church. His son Eadbald succeeded him and at first restored pagan cult before converting; his daughter Æthelburh married King Edwin of Northumbria and helped introduce Christianity there.

Veneration of Æthelberht as a saint followed his death. His feast is kept on 24 February in the Roman calendar and on 25 February in some Anglican calendars. He was not the subject of a later medieval papal canonization; his cult belongs to the pre-congregation period. Later writers expanded his legend, but the principal historical account remains Bede's Ecclesiastical History, composed in the early eighth century. Æthelberht's conversion and his support for Augustine's mission made Kent the bridgehead of Roman Christianity among the English and established Canterbury as the seat of the southern archbishopric.
