Biography

Short Description

Alberht, also recorded under the name Æthelberht, was a king of the East Angles in the middle of the eighth century. He is among the most poorly documented rulers of the Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy. The sole narrative reference to him occurs in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, which states that in 749, after the death of King Ælfwald, Hunbeanna and Alberht divided the kingdom of East Anglia. Scholars continue to debate whether this annal records joint kingship among two or three men (Hun, Beonna, and Alberht) or a partition of territory. No genealogy, charter, letter, or later medieval chronicle supplies his parentage, the length of his reign, or the date and circumstances of his death.

Beonna, the co-ruler named alongside him, is independently attested by a comparatively large issue of silver sceattas whose designs show both native and Frankish influence. These coins indicate that East Anglia still maintained a royal mint and some economic activity in the 750s, even as Mercian power under Æthelbald was expanding across southern England. A unique coin has occasionally been attributed to Alberht on the strength of a runic legend, but the reading remains contested among numismatists and cannot be regarded as certain. Apart from this possible piece, no physical object, inscription, or archaeological site can be securely linked to him. The rich princely burials of the earlier Sutton Hoo period have no counterpart in the mid-eighth-century evidence for East Anglia.

Alberht’s floruit belongs to a time when the old Wuffingas kingdom was losing independence. Mercian overlordship, already felt in the days of Ælfwald, grew heavier in the following decades and culminated in Offa’s domination of the region. It is essential not to conflate this Alberht with the later East Anglian king Æthelberht who was put to death in 794 and thereafter venerated as a martyr, with a cult centred at Hereford. No liturgical calendar, saint’s life, or dedication associates the earlier Alberht with any religious cult, feast day, or patronage.

In the present state of the sources Alberht remains little more than a name in a king-list. His obscurity is typical of the documentary silence that surrounds the lesser Anglo-Saxon kingdoms once the historian moves away from Northumbria, Mercia, and Wessex. Future coin finds or, far less probably, the recovery of a charter might one day add a few facts; until then he stands as a reminder of how fragmentary our knowledge of eighth-century East Anglia actually is.
