Biography

Short Description

Æthelburh of Barking, also known in later English as Ethelburga, was a seventh-century Anglo-Saxon abbess whose life is known almost exclusively from the account given by the Venerable Bede in Book IV of his Ecclesiastical History of the English People. She was the sister of Eorcenwald (Erkenwald), later Bishop of London, a man of noble birth who, before his consecration to the episcopate around 675, established two monastic foundations. One of these, at Chertsey in Surrey, he reserved for himself and a community of monks; the other, a double monastery at Barking in the kingdom of the East Saxons, he committed to Æthelburh as its first abbess. The foundation of Barking is generally placed in the 660s. Nothing reliable is recorded of her parentage beyond this fraternal relationship, of her place or date of birth, or of the circumstances in which she entered the religious life.

As abbess, Æthelburh governed a community of women and, in the manner of several early English houses, an associated community of men. Bede presents her as a woman of holiness and as a capable superior. His narrative of Barking is chiefly concerned with supernatural signs that accompanied an outbreak of plague in the monastery. He relates that a nun named Tortgyth, long afflicted by a painful illness, beheld in a vision a body wrapped in a shining winding-sheet being drawn up toward heaven by cords of gold; the vision was taken to signify the imminent death of the abbess and the reception of her soul. Bede also records other portents at Barking, including a miraculous light in the monastic church and the story of a three-year-old boy in the community who, as he died, called out the name of a deceased nun as if she had come for him. These episodes belong to Bede’s larger purpose of illustrating the sanctity of the English church amid pestilence.

The year of Æthelburh’s death is not stated by Bede. Later medieval tradition commonly assigned it to about 675, and her feast came to be kept on 11 October. Some modern discussions of East Saxon charters have suggested that she may still have been living in the 680s, but the documentary evidence is sparse and not beyond question. She was succeeded as abbess by Hildelith, a woman of learning who had received formation in Francia and under whom Barking continued as a notable center of female monastic life and Latin culture. Æthelburh was buried at her own monastery. Barking Abbey remained an important nunnery throughout the Middle Ages until its suppression in the sixteenth century.

Æthelburh was venerated as a saint in the English church from an early date. Her cult was of the type later termed pre-congregation, established by local reputation and liturgical observance rather than by a formal papal process. She must be distinguished from other seventh-century women of the same name, notably Æthelburh of Kent, daughter of King Æthelberht and wife of King Edwin of Northumbria, and Æthelburh of Faremoutiers, daughter of King Anna of East Anglia. The London church of St Ethelburga-the-Virgin in Bishopsgate has traditionally been associated with the abbess of Barking, reflecting her brother’s connection with the see of London. Beyond her association with Barking itself, no extensive list of later patronages is securely documented. The historical record of her life remains thin: Bede is the principal witness, later hagiography adds little that can be independently verified, and the historian must therefore acknowledge both her importance in the first generation of organized female monasticism in the East Saxon kingdom and the narrow limits of what can be known about her as an individual.
