Biography

Short Description

Æthelburh of Kent, also called Ethelburga and known by the byname Tata, was a seventh-century Kentish princess who became queen of the Northumbrians and, after her husband’s death, abbess of a monastery at Lyminge. She was the daughter of King Æthelberht of Kent, the first Anglo-Saxon ruler to receive Christian baptism, and of Queen Bertha, a Frankish Christian and daughter of the Merovingian king Charibert I of Paris. Through her mother she belonged to a royal household that was already Christian in practice before Augustine of Canterbury’s mission arrived in 597. Her brother Eadbald succeeded their father in 616. No contemporary source records the year or place of her birth, beyond her origin in the Kentish royal family.

In 625 she was married to Edwin, king of the Northumbrians, in a diplomatic alliance between Kent and Northumbria. Bede reports that a condition of the marriage was that she remain free to practise Christianity and that she be accompanied by the Roman priest Paulinus, whom Archbishop Justus consecrated bishop for the northern kingdom. Pope Boniface V wrote to her, in a letter preserved by Bede, urging her to labour for her husband’s conversion and sending her a silver mirror and an ivory comb adorned with gold. After an assassination attempt on Edwin and the birth of their daughter Eanflæd at Easter 626, Edwin permitted Eanflæd and twelve members of the household to be baptised at Pentecost, the first recorded baptisms in Northumbria. Edwin himself was baptised at York at Easter 627, and a wooden church dedicated to St Peter was built there. Æthelburh thus stood at the centre of the Roman mission’s extension from Kent into the north.

The marriage produced several children. Eanflæd survived to adulthood and later married King Oswiu of Northumbria, becoming a notable patron of the church, including the monastery at Whitby. A son named Wuscfrea is named by Bede. Bede also refers to infant children of the couple who died shortly after baptism. Edwin had had offspring by an earlier union; among those who later travelled with Æthelburh was Yffi, Edwin’s grandson. The queen’s household, with Paulinus, formed the core of the short-lived Northumbrian church of the 620s and early 630s, which collapsed after Edwin’s death.

Edwin was killed at the battle of Hatfield Chase in October 633. In the ensuing wreck of the Northumbrian kingdom, Paulinus, Æthelburh, and the royal children fled by sea to Kent, taking a large gold cross and a golden chalice from the church at York. King Eadbald received his sister. The boys Wuscfrea and Yffi were afterwards sent for safety to the Frankish king Dagobert and died in Gaul. Eanflæd remained in Kent until her marriage into the Bernician dynasty. Æthelburh did not return to a royal court as queen but turned to the religious life.

With her brother’s support she established a community at the royal vill of Lyminge in Kent, generally described as a double monastery, and ruled it as abbess. Later tradition associates the house with Benedictine observance, though seventh-century Kentish monasticism was formed by Roman and Frankish models rather than by a single later rule. She is credited with building a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary at Lyminge. Later sources place her death in 647. She was buried at Lyminge, where a cult grew up around her tomb; the later parish church there bears her name together with St Mary’s. Her feast is kept on 5 April. She is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church and in Anglican calendars. Her recognition as a saint belongs to the age before the formal papal process of canonisation.
