Biography

Short Description

Æthelhard (also spelled Æthelheard, Ethelhard, or Ethelheard) was an Anglo-Saxon churchman of the late eighth and early ninth centuries who served as Bishop of Winchester and subsequently as Archbishop of Canterbury. Neither the date nor the place of his birth is recorded in surviving sources. Before his elevation to the episcopate he was abbot of a monastery at Louth in Lincolnshire, in the former kingdom of Lindsey, a region then under Mercian influence. He became Bishop of Winchester at an uncertain date between 759 and 778. Nothing reliable is known of his family, and no spouse or children are attested; his career as an abbot indicates a monastic formation.

In 792, after the death of Archbishop Jænberht, King Offa of Mercia secured Æthelhard’s translation from Winchester to Canterbury. Offa had recently obtained papal approval for a new archbishopric at Lichfield, erected at the Synod of Chelsea in 787 under Hygeberht, which stripped Canterbury of metropolitan authority over much of the Mercian church. Æthelhard, whose background tied him to Mercia rather than to Kent, was an acceptable candidate to Offa. He was not consecrated as archbishop until 793. During Offa’s lifetime he accepted the reduced status of his see. The scholar Alcuin of York later corresponded with him on the duties of an archbishop and on the troubled state of the English church.

After Offa’s death in 796, Kent rose against Mercian overlordship under Eadberht Præn, a former priest. Æthelhard fled Canterbury and took refuge with Offa’s successor, King Coenwulf of Mercia. Pope Leo III instructed that he be received back in his metropolitan city. Once Coenwulf had suppressed the revolt in 798, captured Eadberht, and placed his own brother Cuthred over Kent, Æthelhard was restored to Canterbury. Thereafter he cooperated with Coenwulf in seeking the abolition of the Lichfield archbishopric and the recovery of Canterbury’s traditional rights over the southern English bishoprics.

Around 801 Æthelhard travelled to Rome. On 18 January 802 Pope Leo III issued privileges for Christ Church, Canterbury, including confirmation that the monastic community should elect its archbishop. At a council held at Clofesho in 803 the archbishopric of Lichfield was formally abolished; the bishops of the former Lichfield province acknowledged the primacy of Canterbury, and Hygeberht laid down the archiepiscopal rank. Canterbury’s metropolitan authority over southern England was thereby restored. Æthelhard died on 12 May 805 and was succeeded by Wulfred. Contemporary sources record his public acts as bishop and archbishop but are silent on the place of his death and burial and on any later cult.
