Biography

Short Description

Æthelred of Kent was a seventh-century prince of the Kentish royal dynasty, commemorated as a martyr together with his brother Æthelberht. He was a grandson of King Eadbald of Kent and a great-grandson of King Æthelberht I, under whom Kent accepted Christianity at the beginning of the same century. Later genealogical tradition names his father as Eormenred, a son of Eadbald who is not recorded as reigning king in Bede but who figures in Kentish legend as a royal parent of several sainted children. Æthelred’s sister Domne Eafe (also called Domneva or Eormenburh) became the foundress and abbess of Minster-in-Thanet; her daughter Mildrith (Mildred) was the most celebrated saint of that house. No contemporary charter or narrative gives Æthelred’s year of birth, place of birth, or any incident of his childhood. Knowledge of him depends almost entirely on post-Conquest recensions of the Kentish Royal Legend, also called the Mildrith Legend, and on the historical materials of Ramsey Abbey, which in the tenth century claimed the brothers’ relics.

The legend relates that after King Eorcenberht of Kent died in 664, his son Ecgberht I feared the claims or popularity of his cousins Æthelred and Æthelberht. A royal servant named Thunor is said to have murdered the two princes, with the king’s consent or at his instigation, at the royal residence of Eastry in eastern Kent. Their bodies were hidden under the floor of the hall. A column of light, or a similar miracle, disclosed the crime. In some versions Thunor was swallowed by the earth at a place later called Thunor’s Leap. As compensation, Ecgberht allowed Domne Eafe to receive a large estate on the Isle of Thanet, measured according to the story by the course of her tame hind; there she founded the monastery of Minster-in-Thanet. The tale thus links the princes’ deaths to the origin of one of Kent’s principal royal minsters and to the family of Saint Mildrith.

Seventh-century writers, including Bede, are silent about this murder, and modern scholarship regards the narrative as a later construction that may preserve a kernel of dynastic conflict but cannot be dated or verified in detail. A liturgical cult of the two brothers as innocent royal martyrs is nevertheless well attested in the later Anglo-Saxon and medieval periods. Ramsey Abbey in Huntingdonshire, founded in the late tenth century, obtained relics identified as those of Saints Æthelred and Æthelberht and observed their feast. Traditions differ on the intermediate resting place of the bones: Kentish material points to Eastry, while Ramsey-related accounts speak of a translation from Wakering in Essex. English calendars commonly keep the joint feast on 17 October.

Æthelred held no ecclesiastical office. He is not described as a monk or member of a religious order, nor as a husband or father; hagiography presents him as a royal youth killed for political reasons and thereafter honoured as a martyr. He was neither pope nor patriarch. No papal act of canonization or beatification in the later canonical sense is recorded; veneration arose from local and monastic cultus, as was usual for early English saints. Specific patronages of places, trades, or causes attached to Æthelred alone are not clearly documented in the principal hagiographical handbooks. His historical importance lies in the light the legend throws on Kentish royal kindred, female monastic foundation, and the tenth-century reuse of ancient royal relics by reformed Benedictine houses.
