Biography

Short Description

Æthelwine (Old English Æthelwine; also spelled Ethelwine or Aethelwine) was a seventh-century Anglo-Saxon churchman who served as bishop of Lindsey, a former kingdom and later ecclesiastical province in the region of modern Lincolnshire. Almost everything that can be said of him with confidence derives from Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English People, completed in the early eighth century, together with later episcopal lists. Bede presents Æthelwine as a man of holy life and as a member of a prominent Lindsey family devoted to the religious life. His brother Æthelhun travelled to Ireland to study the scriptures and died there in the great plague that struck the British Isles in the mid-660s. Æthelwine himself likewise spent time as a student in Ireland, in the circle associated with the English exile Egbert, before returning to serve the church in his native region. Another brother, Aldwine, became abbot of the monastery of Partney (Peartaneu) in Lindsey, and their sister Æthelhild was an abbess whose community lay in the same district.

The bishopric of Lindsey had a turbulent recent history when Æthelwine was appointed. After King Ecgfrith of Northumbria seized the province from Mercia, Archbishop Theodore of Canterbury consecrated Eadhæd as bishop for the Lindisfari. When Lindsey reverted to Mercian control following the Battle of the Trent in 679, Eadhæd withdrew and was given the see of Ripon. Æthelwine, whose family ties and earlier formation made him a natural choice for a restored Mercian bishopric, succeeded him, probably around 680 and almost certainly with Theodore’s authority. Bede states that Æthelwine occupied the see for a long time and discharged his episcopal office with great authority. The cathedral site of the Lindsey bishops in this period is not certainly identified; later tradition associated the see with a place called Sidnacester, which has been variously linked with Lincoln, Stow, or other sites in the county.

Æthelwine’s household and kindred were closely involved with the principal monasteries of Lindsey, including Bardney and Partney. Bede records that King Æthelred of Mercia and his Northumbrian queen Osthryth translated relics of the martyred Northumbrian king Oswald to Bardney Abbey, and that Æthelhild, described as sister of the holy men Æthelwine the bishop and Aldwine the abbot, was among those who transmitted accounts of miracles associated with Oswald’s remains. These notices place Æthelwine within the network of Mercian royal patronage and of the cult of Oswald that flourished in the late seventh century. They also show that Bede and his informant Bishop Acca of Hexham regarded Æthelwine and his siblings as persons of recognised sanctity. No contemporary narrative of Æthelwine’s own miracles or pastoral acts survives beyond this general reputation.

The year of Æthelwine’s birth is unknown, and the date of his death is not recorded by Bede. Later lists of the bishops of Lindsey place after him a bishop named Edgar (Eadgar), who appears as a witness in the 690s, which suggests that Æthelwine’s episcopate ended in the last decade of the seventh century or around the turn of the eighth. Neither his place of death nor his burial church is securely attested. In later medieval English menologies he was sometimes commemorated as a saint, commonly on 3 May, but there is no evidence of a formal papal canonisation, and the details of any local cult remain obscure. Modern knowledge of Æthelwine is therefore limited: he stands as a well-connected Lindsey prelate of Theodore’s generation, attested by the greatest historian of early England, yet without a surviving vita or a firmly documented chronology of birth and death.
