Biography

Short Description

Saint Theodard (also rendered Théodard, Theodardus, Diethard, or Dierik) was a seventh-century bishop of the diocese of Tongeren-Maastricht in Austrasia, the northeastern portion of the Frankish kingdom. Later medieval hagiography presents him as a native of Speyer on the Rhine. He is said to have entered the monastic life as a disciple of Saint Remaclus, founder of the double monastery of Stavelot-Malmedy in the Ardennes, and to have succeeded Remaclus as abbot before being chosen bishop of Maastricht in the 660s. No genuine contemporary charter or letter of Theodard survives; the outline of his early career depends on vitae written well after his death and must be treated with caution.

As bishop he is remembered chiefly for defending ecclesiastical property against seizure by local magnates. In order to obtain royal redress he travelled to the court of Childeric II, king of Austrasia (reigned 662–675). On the return journey, around the year 670, he was attacked and killed in the forest of Bienwald, south of Speyer in the Rhineland. Tradition regards the killing as a planned assassination connected with the interests he had opposed at court, and therefore honours him as a martyr rather than as the victim of ordinary brigandage. His successor in the see, Saint Lambert of Maastricht, is credited in the later lives with recovering the body and fostering his cult.

The historical record remains thin. Theodard’s name appears in early martyrologies, and his feast on 10 September became established in the churches of the Meuse valley and the Rhineland. After the episcopal seat was transferred from Maastricht to Liège in the eighth century under Saint Hubert, veneration of Theodard continued in the Liège diocese alongside that of Lambert and Hubert. Relics attributed to him have been claimed by churches near the traditional place of martyrdom in the Bienwald and by churches in the former diocese of Liège, but the chain of custody is not documented in contemporary sources.

Modern scholarship accepts that a bishop of Maastricht named Theodard was killed in the later seventh century and was rapidly honoured as a saint, while treating the Speyer origin, the precise political circumstances of the murder, and the miraculous details of the later vitae as pious tradition rather than established fact. He is invoked as a bishop-martyr of the Merovingian church; specific later patronages of cities, professions, or illnesses are not securely attested in the earliest liturgical and hagiographical witnesses.
