Biography

Short Description

Theoderic I of Hamaland, known in German as Dietrich I of Metz and in Latin sources as Theodericus, was bishop of Metz in Upper Lotharingia from 964 until his death in 984. He came from the family of the counts of Hamaland (Hamelant), a county along the lower Rhine and the IJssel in the northeastern Low Countries, then part of the East Frankish or Ottonian realm. Later historical tradition identifies him as a nephew of Queen Matilda, the wife of King Henry I of Germany and mother of Emperor Otto I. That kinship, if correctly reconstructed, would place him among the wider relatives of the Ottonian dynasty and would help explain his promotion to a wealthy and politically important bishopric on the western edge of the empire. His year and place of birth are not recorded in surviving sources.

In 964 Emperor Otto I appointed Theoderic to the see of Metz after the death of Bishop Adalbero I. Metz was one of the chief cities of Lotharingia, with a cathedral church of Saint Stephen and large temporal estates. Ottonian rulers regularly placed trusted kinsmen or court clergy in such bishoprics in order to secure Lotharingia and to bind local elites to the crown. As bishop, Theoderic belonged to the imperial church, in which prelates acted as both spiritual pastors and secular princes. He occupied the see during the last years of Otto I, who died in 973, through the reign of Otto II, and into the beginning of the minority of Otto III.

Surviving evidence for Theoderic's own deeds is limited. He appears as a characteristic high prelate of the tenth-century empire, a magnate who would have attended royal assemblies, governed episcopal lands, and directed the clergy of a major diocese. Later writers, including the eleventh-century chronicler Sigebert of Gembloux in his account of the bishops of Metz, treated the history of the see, but they do not provide a full contemporary biography of this bishop. No monastic or religious order is associated with him; he was a secular clerk raised to the episcopate. No spouse or children are recorded, which accords with the discipline expected of Latin bishops in his age.

Theoderic died in 984, a year of political uncertainty after Otto II died in Italy in December 983 and Henry the Quarrelsome of Bavaria tried to take control of the young Otto III. Some reference works give the date of death as 18 July 984. The place of death and of burial is not securely documented, although bishops of Metz were often buried in their cathedral. He was neither pope nor patriarch. He does not appear in the universal calendars of the saints with a recognized feast day, canonization, or list of patronages. His significance for history lies in his place within the Ottonian imperial church and in the way his career shows how kinship and the strategic value of Lotharingian sees shaped episcopal appointments in the tenth century. Many details of his early life, parentage, and pastoral work cannot be recovered from the fragmentary sources.
