Biography

Short Description

Theodgar of Vestervig, known in Danish as Thøger and in Latin as Theodgarus, was an eleventh-century missionary priest whose memory is tied to the Christianization of northwestern Jutland. Almost everything recorded about him comes from a later medieval vita and from local cult tradition rather than from contemporary eleventh-century documents. According to that tradition he was a native of Thuringia. He is said to have received his education in England and to have been ordained to the priesthood there, a claim that fits the strong English connections of the Scandinavian church in this period but cannot be confirmed independently. No reliable source preserves his year of birth, his family, or the precise place of his origin within Thuringia.

Tradition next places him in Norway as a chaplain to King Olaf II Haraldsson, later venerated as Saint Olaf. In that role he would have belonged to the circle of clergy who accompanied the king’s efforts to strengthen Christianity in Norway. After Olaf was killed at the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030, Theodgar left Norway. The vita presents this as the turning point that brought him to Denmark. The chronology is plausible if his later work in Jutland occupied the middle decades of the eleventh century, but the Norwegian episode itself is known only from hagiography written to honour the saint of Vestervig.

He settled at Vestervig in the district of Thy, in the far northwest of Jutland. Although the Danish kingdom had officially accepted Christianity in the tenth century under Harald Bluetooth, outlying coastal regions were still unevenly evangelized. Theodgar is remembered as the first missionary to preach effectively in Thy. He built a wooden church at Vestervig and gathered a Christian community around it. Later generations regarded him as the apostle of that district and as the founder of the church that still stands, in rebuilt form, at the site. No contemporary charter or chronicle describes this mission; the picture depends on the twelfth-century legend and on the fact that Vestervig became the centre of his cult.

He died at Vestervig and was buried at the church he had founded. Later writers give the date as 24 June and the year as 1067, figures that are traditional rather than documented in an eleventh-century record. Reports of miracles at the tomb produced a local cult. In the early twelfth century a stone church replaced the wooden one. In 1117 his relics were solemnly translated, an act that in the practice of the time amounted to episcopal, local canonization rather than a papal process. Vestervig became a place of pilgrimage. An Augustinian abbey was established there, and the large Romanesque church of Vestervig, among the greatest village churches in Denmark, housed the shrine through the rest of the Middle Ages.

The Protestant Reformation in Denmark in the 1530s ended the public cult, dissolved the abbey, and left the church as a Lutheran parish church, which it remains. Theodgar was never the object of a universal canonization in Rome; his veneration was regional, centred on northern Jutland. He is the patron of Vestervig. His feast has been kept on 24 June, the traditional day of his death, and more commonly in Danish usage on 30 October, the commemoration of the translation of his relics. Historians treat the vita with caution: Thuringian birth, English ordination, and service under Saint Olaf are possible and consistent with the age, but they rest on a single later legend written to support a local shrine.
