Biography

Short Description

Theodore of Amasea, commonly known as Theodore Tiron or Theodore the Recruit (from the Latin tiro, a newly enlisted soldier), is a Christian martyr of the early fourth century whose cult became one of the most widespread among the military saints of the late Roman and Byzantine worlds. The earliest substantial witness to his veneration is a homily delivered by Gregory of Nyssa at the martyr’s shrine in the later fourth century. According to the hagiographical tradition that grew around him, Theodore was a young conscript serving in the Roman army at Amasea (Amaseia) in Pontus, in northern Asia Minor, during the Great Persecution under the Tetrarchy. He is generally held to have suffered martyrdom in the first decade of the fourth century, often dated to 306, though that year is known from later tradition rather than from contemporary documentary records. Nothing reliable is known of his place of birth, family, or early life beyond his status as a recruit.

The various recensions of his Passion relate that Theodore openly professed the Christian faith and refused to take part in the obligatory sacrifices to the pagan gods. In the most dramatic episode of the legend he set fire to the temple of Cybele, the Mother of the Gods, at Amasea. Arrested and brought before the provincial governor, he endured scourging and imprisonment. Offered a final opportunity to recant, he remained steadfast and was condemned to death by fire, perishing in the flames. Gregory of Nyssa’s encomium, while rhetorical rather than strictly biographical, already presents him as a soldier-martyr whose courage and confession of Christ were celebrated at a well-established sanctuary, indicating that a local cult had taken firm root within a few generations of the persecution.

The principal centre of his veneration in Anatolia was Euchaita in Pontus (near modern Beyözü in Turkey), which developed into a major pilgrimage shrine and is the traditional place of his burial. Churches dedicated to Theodore multiplied across the Byzantine Empire, and he was ranked with Saints George, Demetrius, and Mercurius among the great warrior saints of the East. Later legend associated him with a miracle under the emperor Julian: appearing in a dream, Theodore warned the Christians of Constantinople not to buy food from the market, which had been polluted with blood from pagan sacrifices, and instructed them to eat kollyva (boiled wheat) instead. This story, though historically problematic in its details, underlies the Orthodox commemoration of Theodore on the first Saturday of Great Lent, when kollyva is blessed. In the later tenth century the emperor John I Tzimiskes attributed a military victory to the saint’s intercession and is associated with the rebuilding and honouring of Euchaita, sometimes called Theodoropolis.

Western Christendom also received his cult at an early date. He was the original patron saint of Venice in the city’s Byzantine period, before the translation of the relics of Saint Mark; a statue of Theodore standing upon a crocodile or dragon still occupies one of the two great columns in the Piazzetta di San Marco. Relics attributed to him were claimed by a number of Western churches, including foundations in Venice and elsewhere in Italy. In the Roman Martyrology his feast has commonly been observed on 9 November, while the Byzantine churches keep 17 February as his principal feast, in addition to the Lenten Saturday. Hagiographers and modern scholars have long noted the close relationship, and possible literary dependence, between the legend of Theodore Tiron and that of Theodore Stratelates (the General), a related or doublet figure associated with Heraclea and Euchaita; whether they represent one historical martyr or two distinct cults remains a matter of scholarly discussion. No reliable evidence survives concerning Theodore’s marriage or children, and he belonged to no religious order.
