Biography

Short Description

Saint Theodore of Sanaksar, known in the world as Ivan Ignatievich Ushakov, was a Russian Orthodox monk and abbot of the Sanaksar Monastery. He was born in 1718 in the village of Burnakovo in the Yaroslavl region of the Russian Empire, into the noble Ushakov family. The same estate later produced his nephew, the naval commander Fyodor Fyodorovich Ushakov, who was himself glorified as a saint. In his youth Ivan served as an officer in the Preobrazhensky Life Guards Regiment in Saint Petersburg. While still a young man he abandoned military service and court life in order to seek the monastic path.

He first attached himself to monastic houses in the capital region, including the Alexander Nevsky Monastery, and then to the Sarov Hermitage, a major center of strict Russian monasticism in the eighteenth century. He received the monastic tonsure with the name Theodore. From Sarov he was sent to the neglected Sanaksar Monastery near Temnikov, on the Moksha River in what is now the Republic of Mordovia. There he worked to restore cenobitic life, rebuild the monastery, and gather a community. He was ordained to the priesthood and served as abbot (often styled builder) of Sanaksar, imposing a rigorous communal rule modeled on Sarov.

His firm discipline and independence of local landowners and officials led to conflict and denunciations. He was removed from office in the 1770s and spent a number of years away from Sanaksar before being permitted to return in old age. He died at the monastery on 19 February 1791 (Old Style) and was buried there. His nephew Admiral Ushakov later retired to Sanaksar and was buried nearby; the two graves became a single focus of later veneration.

In 1999 the relics of Theodore were uncovered at Sanaksar. That year he was glorified as a locally venerated saint with the blessing of Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow, and his memory was received more widely in the Russian Orthodox Church. He is commemorated on 19 February (4 March in the civil calendar) and on 21 April (4 May), the day of the uncovering of his relics. He is remembered as a restorer of monastic order in eighteenth-century Russia. Surviving accounts of his life are largely later hagiographical texts and monastery tradition rather than contemporary biographies, so some details of his early career and of the disputes that led to his temporary removal remain imperfectly documented.
