Biography

Short Description

Theodore Romzha was born on 14 April 1911 in Velykyi Bychkiv (then Nagybocskó), a village in Máramaros County of the Kingdom of Hungary within Austria-Hungary, in the Carpathian Ruthenian region that is now part of Zakarpattia Oblast in Ukraine. He came from a Greek Catholic family of modest circumstances; his father worked for the railway. After primary schooling in his native village he attended the gymnasium in Khust. Discerning a priestly vocation in the Byzantine-rite Catholic Church, he was sent to Rome, where he lived at the Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum and studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He was ordained to the priesthood in Rome on 25 December 1936. After further studies he returned in 1938 to Transcarpathia, which had become part of Czechoslovakia after the First World War and would shortly pass under Hungarian control.

In his homeland he served in parish ministry, taught philosophy at the eparchial seminary in Uzhhorod, and for a time acted as a military chaplain. On 8 September 1944 Pope Pius XII named the thirty-three-year-old priest apostolic administrator of the vacant Eparchy of Mukachevo, one of the principal sees of the Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church. He was consecrated bishop on 24 September 1944 in Uzhhorod. Within weeks the Red Army occupied Transcarpathia, which was soon annexed to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Soviet policy aimed at the destruction of the Greek Catholic Church and its absorption into the Russian Orthodox Church under the Moscow Patriarchate. Bishop Romzha refused to break communion with Rome or to surrender church property. He continued pastoral visitations, often traveling by horse-drawn wagon over poor roads, confirming the faithful and ordaining clergy in an effort to keep the eparchy alive under mounting restrictions.

On 27 October 1947, while returning from a visitation, his carriage was struck by a Soviet military vehicle near Lavky; the bishop and those with him were then assaulted. Gravely injured, Romzha was taken to the hospital in Mukachevo. While he appeared to be recovering, he was poisoned during the night of 31 October–1 November 1947. Later archival research and testimony indicated that the killing was organized by the Soviet security services, with a toxic injection administered in the hospital. He died in the early hours of 1 November 1947. Soviet authorities attributed the death solely to the traffic incident. In 1949 the Eparchy of Mukachevo was liquidated, its remaining clergy imprisoned or forced into Orthodoxy, and its churches confiscated.

After the legalization of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church at the end of Soviet rule, devotion to Bishop Romzha as a martyr grew. His remains, originally buried in Mukachevo, were later transferred to the Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Uzhhorod. Pope John Paul II beatified him as a martyr on 27 June 2001 during a Divine Liturgy in Lviv, Ukraine. Blessed Theodore Romzha is commemorated on 31 October and is remembered for his fidelity to the union with Rome and for pastoral courage in the face of totalitarian persecution.
