Biography

Short Description

Theodore the Varangian (also rendered Fyodor or Fedor) is the name given in later Orthodox hagiography to a Christian of Scandinavian origin who was killed at Kiev in 983 together with his son John. He belonged to the Varangians, Norse warriors and traders who moved along the river routes between the Baltic and the Black Sea and who often took service in Byzantium. The Primary Chronicle of Rus' states that this Varangian had come from the Greek lands, that is the Byzantine Empire, where he had accepted Christianity, and that he then lived in Kiev in a house on the hill later occupied by the Church of the Tithes. The oldest chronicle text does not itself supply the personal names Theodore and John; those names belong to subsequent liturgical and hagiographical tradition, which has nonetheless been accepted in the Russian Orthodox calendar.

According to the chronicle entry for the year 6491 (983), Prince Vladimir Sviatoslavich, still a pagan, returned from a campaign against the Yatvingians. The elders and boyars of Kiev resolved to offer a human sacrifice in thanksgiving to the Slavic gods. Lots were cast and fell upon the Varangian’s son. A crowd came to the house to take the youth. The father refused to surrender him, declaring that the idols were lifeless wood and that there was one God who had made heaven and earth. The people then tore down the house and killed both father and son. The episode is presented as the first recorded instance of Christians put to death for their faith on the territory of Rus', occurring five years before Vladimir’s own conversion and the baptism of Kiev.

After the conversion of 988, Vladimir founded the Church of the Tithes (Desyatinnaya Church), the first stone church of Kiev, on or beside the site of the Varangian household. Later tradition treated the church in part as a memorial to the two martyrs, though the chronicle does not describe their burial and no contemporary account of the translation of relics survives. The Russian Orthodox Church commemorates Theodore and John on 12 July. They appear in synaxaria and menologia as proto-martyrs of the Kievan church. Theodore held no known ecclesiastical office; he was a lay Christian of foreign origin living under a still-pagan prince, and his household is the earliest named Christian family in the Kievan narrative.

Beyond the chronicle notice and the later naming of the pair, almost nothing can be verified. No Byzantine, Scandinavian, or other contemporary document has been shown to mention this Theodore. The name of his wife is unrecorded. Claims about his exact Scandinavian homeland, his career in imperial service, or a precise burial inside the later Tithe Church rest on inference rather than direct evidence. His historical significance therefore lies in the tenth-century Kievan setting itself: a Varangian convert from Constantinople whose refusal of a pagan sacrifice, as told in the early twelfth-century compilation of the Primary Chronicle, became the founding martyrdom story of Christian Rus'.
