Biography

Short Description

Théodoret de Kola, known in Russian as Feodorit Kolsky, was a sixteenth-century monk, missionary priest, and archimandrite of the Russian Orthodox Church, remembered above all for his preaching among the Sami (then commonly called Lapps) of the Kola Peninsula. Traditional accounts, followed by standard Orthodox reference works, place his birth in 1481 at Rostov (Rostov Veliky) in the Grand Duchy of Moscow. As a youth of about thirteen he entered the Solovetsky Monastery in the White Sea, received the monastic tonsure, and remained there for some fifteen years. That northern house, already famous for the memory of Saints Zosima and Sabbatius, shaped his ascetic formation and his later impulse toward missionary work on the Arctic frontier.

Leaving Solovki, he settled in the wilderness of the Kola Peninsula, a region then inhabited mainly by Sami communities whose religion was shamanic and who paid tribute to Novgorod and later to Moscow. He is reported to have learned the local language, lived in a hermitage, and begun to instruct and baptize converts. Later tradition associates him with a church of the Annunciation and with the organization of monastic life near Kola. He traveled to Novgorod to be ordained hieromonk by the archbishop and then returned to the north. His mission unfolded in the same generation as that of Saint Tryphon of Pechenga, though the two men worked in related but distinct settings. Hagiographical sources speak of numerous baptisms and of opposition both from local pagan leaders and from some Russian settlers and tribute-takers; such details cannot be independently quantified and belong to the pious narrative rather than to archival record.

In the middle of the sixteenth century Théodoret was called into the central church life of Muscovy and was made archimandrite of the Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery in Suzdal. He stood with the Non-Possessor current in Russian monasticism and was linked to the circle of the learned Athonite Maxim the Greek. Prince Andrei Kurbsky, who later wrote about him from Lithuanian exile, presented Théodoret as an austere and educated monk at odds with the Josephite party that favored wealthy, politically engaged monasteries. These conflicts led to his removal from office and a period of confinement at the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery. After his release he spent time at other communities, including connections with the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, before turning once more toward the north.

He died in 1571, according to the received date on 17 August. Surviving sources do not establish the place of death with certainty; later tradition has associated his last years either with the Kola country or with a return to Solovki. The Russian Orthodox Church venerates him as a saint. His principal feast falls on 17 August (corresponding to 30 August on the Revised Julian or Gregorian civil calendar used in some churches), and he is also commemorated in synaxes of the saints of the Kola land and of the Solovetsky Monastery. Almost all that is known of his biography derives from Kurbsky’s History of the Grand Prince of Moscow and from subsequent Orthodox lives; modern historians therefore treat many anecdotal particulars with caution while still regarding Théodoret as a central figure in the sixteenth-century Christianization of the Sami of the far Russian north.
