Biography

Short Description

Theodorus of Tabennese, also known as Theodore the Sanctified or Abba Theodore, was a Christian monk of fourth-century Egypt and one of the principal disciples of Pachomius the Great, organizer of the first large cenobitic communities in the Nile valley. He was born in 314 at Latopolis (Egyptian Snê, modern Esna) in the Thebaid of Upper Egypt, to Christian parents of comfortable means. Formed in the church of his native city, he resolved as an adolescent, about the age of fourteen, to become a monk. After a short time with ascetics near Latopolis he heard of Pachomius and the monastery of Tabennese and sought admission there. Pachomius received him into the koinonia. The Pachomian Lives, surviving in Sahidic, Bohairic, and Greek recensions, make Theodore a central figure of the movement’s second generation and are the main source for his career.

Pachomius entrusted Theodore with teaching and with government while he was still a young man, including charge of Tabennese after the founder’s own residence shifted to the larger house of Pbow. The sources present him as a capable catechist and a strict observer of the common rule, yet they also record that Pachomius corrected him in public so that he would not grow conceited. Theodore’s mother later sought him at the monastery and, after an interval, entered the associated community of women—an episode used in the Lives to illustrate both the pull of kinship and the monk’s duty to the common life. Theodore belonged to the circle that tied the Theban monasteries to the church of Alexandria. Athanasius visited the Pachomian houses, and later writers such as Palladius and the author of the Letter of Ammon remembered Theodore as a spiritual father of wide reputation during the Arian conflicts of the mid-fourth century.

Pachomius died in the late 340s. Petronius, named as successor, lived only a short time. Horsiesios (Orsisius) then became head of the koinonia, but unrest and the danger that individual houses would secede produced a crisis. The brethren turned to Theodore. With Horsiesios remaining in office, Theodore assumed the practical leadership of the federation, traveling among the monasteries, enforcing the rule, and holding the communities together. Ancient accounts credit him with preventing the disintegration of Pachomian cenobitism. He is described as a man of tears and intercession, attentive to weaker monks, and careful not to eclipse Horsiesios in title even while he bore the burden of government. He was an abbot, not a bishop, and he never held the see of Alexandria or any patriarchal office.

Theodore died in 368. Horsiesios thereafter directed the monasteries alone. Theodore was honored as a saint in Egypt from an early period and is recognized in the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox (including Coptic), and Roman Catholic churches. The Eastern Orthodox feast falls on 16 May; the Coptic synaxarium commemorates him in the month of Pashons. He entered monastic life as an adolescent and remained unmarried and without children. Evidence for his biography is limited to the Pachomian hagiographical corpus, related monastic rules and letters, and scattered notices in fifth-century church historians. The exact place of his death and burial is not independently documented beyond the setting of the Upper Egyptian Pachomian monasteries, of which Pbow was the chief.
