Biography

Short Description

Theodosius of Kyiv, also called Theodosius of the Caves, was an eleventh-century monk of Kievan Rus' who, together with Anthony of the Caves, shaped the early Monastery of the Caves (the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra) and is credited with introducing organized cenobitic monasticism to the East Slavic lands. The principal narrative of his life is the hagiography composed in the late eleventh century by Nestor, a monk of the same house. According to that Life, Theodosius was born in the town of Vasilev (present-day Vasylkiv), not far from Kyiv, into a family of some standing; his father served in an official or judicial capacity under princely authority. While Theodosius was still a child the household moved to Kursk. Nestor portrays him from youth as unusually drawn to church services, to reading, and to voluntary poverty. He is said to have worn coarse clothing and to have worked alongside household servants, conduct that repeatedly angered his mother, a forceful woman who intended a secular career for her son. After his father's death, when Theodosius was about thirteen, he attempted to leave with pilgrims for the Holy Land; his mother intercepted him, beat him, and for a time confined him. He later baked liturgical bread for the local church, an occupation she likewise tried to suppress.

Hearing of the hermit Anthony living in a cave on the Dnieper near Kyiv, Theodosius left Kursk and sought admission to that small community. Anthony received him, and the monk Nikon tonsured him. When his mother at last discovered his whereabouts, she was persuaded, according to Nestor, to take the veil herself at a convent in Kyiv. Theodosius was subsequently ordained to the priesthood. After Varlaam, the first abbot of the Caves community, was transferred to another house, the brethren chose Theodosius as igumen, an office he assumed in the early 1060s. He obtained the monastic rule of the Studion monastery in Constantinople and imposed a fully cenobitic regime: common property, common meals, prescribed hours of work and prayer, and a written custom. Under his direction a wooden church of the Dormition was raised above the caves, cells were organized on a communal plan, and the monastery began to acquire the character of a coenobium rather than a loose cluster of hermits. Anthony remained the revered eremitical founder; Theodosius became the organizer of communal life and is therefore often described as the father of cenobitic monasticism in Rus'.

As abbot he was remembered for severe personal austerity joined to practical charity. He wore poor garments, took part in the baking of bread and other manual labour, and established a hospice for the poor and the sick near the monastery. He maintained close, and at times tense, relations with the princes of Kyiv. He was a spiritual counsellor to Iziaslav Yaroslavich and, during the princely strife of the 1070s, initially refused liturgical commemoration of Sviatoslav, who had driven Iziaslav from the throne; a later reconciliation is recorded in the sources. A small body of writings is attributed to him, including exhortations to the brethren, a letter or treatise concerning the Latin faith addressed to Prince Iziaslav, and prayers. If authentic, these texts rank among the earliest original theological writings of Kievan Rus'. Precise dates of composition cannot be fixed with certainty, and modern scholarship treats the attributions with some caution, but the portrait of an abbot who taught, administered, and corresponded with the court is consistent with the chronicle notices.

Theodosius died on 3 May 1074 and was buried in the cave he had used for ascetic practice. In 1091 his remains were reported incorrupt and were translated to the Dormition church of the monastery, an event commemorated on 14 August. In 1108, at the petition of Abbot Theoktistos and with the support of Prince Sviatopolk II, Metropolitan Nikephoros of Kyiv ordered that Theodosius's name be entered in the synodikon for commemoration throughout the eparchies of Rus', which constituted his formal glorification. He has since been venerated as one of the principal monastic saints of the East Slavic churches and as co-founder of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. His relics have remained associated with that monastery through later destructions and restorations, including the Mongol sack of Kyiv in the thirteenth century. His principal feast is 3 May; he is also remembered on the day of the translation of his relics and in the synaxes of the fathers of the Caves. Traditional birth years such as 1009 or the mid-1030s appear in later calendars and reference works but are not securely established by contemporary evidence, and the hagiography itself does not supply a birth date.
