Biography

Short Description

Theodosius, known to later generations as the Cenobiarch, was born in the village of Mogarissus in Cappadocia, in the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire, in the early fifth century. The principal ancient account of his life is the biography composed in the mid-sixth century by Cyril of Scythopolis, a monk of the Judaean Desert who had access to the traditions of Theodosius's own monastery. According to that narrative, Theodosius received a Christian education and served as a lector before deciding, while still a young man, to leave Cappadocia for the holy places of Palestine. On the way he visited the celebrated stylite Symeon near Antioch; Symeon is said to have recognized his future vocation and given him a blessing. In Jerusalem Theodosius attached himself to the monk Longinus. He was subsequently given charge of the church of the Kathisma, a Marian shrine founded by a pious woman named Ikelia on the road from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, but he found the responsibilities and the proximity of pilgrims incompatible with the solitude he sought.

Withdrawing into the wilderness of Judah, Theodosius took up residence in a cave that local Christian tradition associated with the Magi who had come to Bethlehem. There he lived as a hermit until disciples began to gather around him. The community that formed was organized not as a laura of scattered cells but as a cenobium, a monastery of common life with shared meals, liturgy, and labor. Over time the foundation grew into one of the largest monastic establishments in Palestine. It included multiple churches so that Greek-speaking, Armenian, and other groups of monks could celebrate the liturgy in their own languages; a xenodocheion or hospice for pilgrims and the poor; and infirmaries, including provision for those suffering from mental illness. Theodosius thus combined the ascetic ideal with a notable degree of organized charity and hospitality.

In 494 Patriarch Sallustius of Jerusalem formally divided the supervision of Palestinian monasticism, appointing Theodosius as archimandrite of all who lived the cenobitic life and Saint Sabas as archimandrite of the anchorites. From this office Theodosius received the title Cenobiarch, meaning chief of the cenobites. He and Sabas, though representing different monastic styles, cooperated in defending the doctrinal definition of the Council of Chalcedon of 451 against imperial and local opposition. When the emperor Anastasius I supported the anti-Chalcedonian cause, Theodosius and the monks of the desert resisted. Contemporary accounts describe a public stand in Jerusalem and a period of pressure or exile; after Anastasius died in 518, the emperor Justin I restored Chalcedonian bishops and Theodosius's authority in the desert was confirmed.

Theodosius lived to an extreme old age and died on 11 January 529 in the monastery he had founded. He was buried there, in or beside the cave that had been his first cell. The monastery, often called the Monastery of Saint Theodosius or Deir Dosi, remained an important house through the later Byzantine period and, after interruptions, continues as a monastic site east of Bethlehem. Veneration of Theodosius as a saint is ancient in both the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches; his feast is observed on 11 January. Together with Sabas, he is remembered as one of the principal organizers of monastic life in the Judaean Desert, and Cyril of Scythopolis's biography remains a central document for the history of Palestinian monasticism in the fifth and sixth centuries.
