Biography

Short Description

The name Theodota appears in early Christian martyrologies in connection with more than one figure, reflecting the popularity of the name among Christians in the Greek-speaking East of the late Roman Empire. The best-attested of these is a martyr associated with Nicaea in Bithynia (in northwestern Asia Minor). Historical details about her life are scarce and derive almost entirely from later hagiographical texts rather than from contemporary documents. Tradition presents her as a Christian widow of the late third or early fourth century who had three sons and who raised them in the faith after her husband's death.

During the Great Persecution under the emperor Diocletian, Theodota and her sons were arrested as Christians. According to the surviving passion narratives they refused to recant or to offer sacrifice to the pagan gods. Hagiographical accounts describe imprisonment and various tortures, including scourging. The precise names of officials, the exact sequence of events, and even the names of the sons are reported with variation across manuscripts, which is typical of the epic-passion genre.

Theodota and her children were put to death for their faith. Traditional reports of the manner of execution differ, some speaking of beheading and others of death by fire. Their commemoration entered both Eastern and Western martyrologies at an early date. In the Roman Martyrology they are listed on 2 August among the martyrs of Nicaea. Because the narratives belong to a legendary literary type composed or elaborated well after the events they describe, historians treat specific biographical claims with caution. No independent secular source confirms this particular Theodota, although the broader context of persecution in Bithynia in the early fourth century is historically well established.

She is venerated as a saint and martyr and is remembered as an example of steadfast faith and maternal devotion. Beyond the liturgical notices, little can be said with certainty about the later history of her cult or relics. Other early martyrs named Theodota, including figures linked in some texts with Saint Anastasia or with Philippopolis in Thrace, are sometimes confused with her in later compilations, underscoring how limited and overlapping the surviving evidence remains.
