Biography

Short Description

Saint Theodotus of Ancyra is the figure most commonly intended in Western hagiography when the name Theodotus is given without further qualification. He is remembered as a Christian of Ancyra in Galatia (the site of present-day Ankara) who suffered in the Great Persecution associated with the emperor Diocletian. The Greek passio that preserves his legend describes him as an innkeeper who used his house to shelter fellow Christians, to furnish them with food, and to see that the bodies of those already executed received burial. He is not recorded as a bishop, monk, or member of a religious order, and no reliable source assigns him papal or patriarchal office. His year of birth is unknown; even the traditional death date of 303 is inferred from the general chronology of the Diocletianic edicts rather than from an independent documentary record.

The distinctive episode of the legend concerns seven consecrated virgins of Ancyra, among them Tecusa (Thecusa), whom some recensions call Theodotus’s aunt, together with Alexandra, Claudia, Phaina (Faina), Euphrasia, Matrona, and Julitta. After they refused pagan rites they were publicly humiliated and drowned in a lake with stones fastened to them. Theodotus is said to have recovered the bodies by night and buried them. The governor named in the Acts, Theotecnus, had already been seeking him; the recovery of the relics brought the innkeeper into the open. He was arrested, interrogated, and tortured in an effort to compel sacrifice to the gods. The narrative then describes a sequence of torments followed by beheading.

According to the same passio, companions carried the body to Malos (Malus), a place on the road from Ancyra, in accordance with a wish Theodotus had expressed, and a martyrium later stood over the tomb. The Roman Martyrology commemorates Theodotus together with the seven virgins on 18 May; some Eastern calendars keep the same date or, in certain traditions, a day in early June. Because the cult is ancient there was no later papal canonization in the medieval juridical sense; his name entered the martyrologies through liturgical custom. No early source documents a wife or children, and he has no widely attested list of patronages in later Catholic or Orthodox devotion.

Modern criticism treats the Acts with caution. The text, sometimes attributed to a writer named Nilus who presents himself as a contemporary, has the shape of a late antique martyr-romance: named officials, set speeches, and a tightly plotted chain of discoveries. Bollandist and other scholarly study has long noted legendary and literary features and does not regard every detail as historically secure. That a Christian named Theodotus was honoured as a martyr at Ancyra remains the core of the tradition; beyond that outline, and beyond the feast on which East and West have remembered him, little about his family, education, or inner life can be verified from sources independent of the passio.
