Biography

Short Description

Theodulf of Orléans was a Visigothic prelate, poet, and theologian who ranked among the principal scholars of the Carolingian Renaissance. Of Gothic family and born in Spain in the eighth century, he left the Iberian Peninsula and entered the service of Charlemagne, whose court attracted learned clergy from Italy, England, Ireland, and the remnants of Visigothic Spain. By the 790s Theodulf had become a trusted counsellor. Charlemagne named him bishop of Orléans about 798 and entrusted him as well with the abbey of Fleury (Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire). In that double capacity he worked to implement the king's programme of religious and educational reform, issuing diocesan statutes that required priests to know the creeds, the Lord's Prayer, and the rites of baptism and Mass, and that promoted the establishment of schools.

Theodulf's most consequential theological labour was almost certainly the composition of the Libri Carolini, or Opus Caroli regis contra synodum, drafted in Charlemagne's name in the early 790s as a response to the Second Council of Nicaea and to Byzantine teaching on religious images. The lengthy treatise rejected both the destruction of images and their cultic veneration, arguing from Scripture and the Latin Fathers for a restrained use of art as a means of teaching and remembrance. The work reveals Theodulf's wide reading, his concern for correct Latinity, and the distinctive theological culture of the Frankish court. He also took part in the examination of the filioque and other doctrinal questions that occupied Carolingian synods.

As a man of letters Theodulf produced a substantial body of Latin poetry: biblical epics and paraphrases, moral and satirical verse, inscriptions, and poems describing his estates and the books he collected. He is the traditional author of the processional hymn Gloria, laus et honor, later sung on Palm Sunday in the Roman rite. At his villa of Germigny-des-Prés, not far from Orléans, he built an oratory whose mosaic decoration—an image of the Ark of the Covenant adored by angels—survives as a rare example of monumental Carolingian art and as a visual counterpart to the arguments of the Libri Carolini. He sponsored careful copies of the Bible; the so-called Theodulfian recension of the Vulgate reflects an effort to improve the biblical text then in circulation in Francia.

Theodulf's fortunes collapsed after Charlemagne's death. Under Louis the Pious he was implicated, justly or not, in the rebellion of Bernard of Italy in 817. A synod in 818 deposed him from Orléans. He was confined in a monastery, according to the usual account at Angers, and there he died in 821. Later medieval legend claimed that he wrote Gloria, laus et honor in captivity and that children sang it as the emperor passed, but the story cannot be verified from contemporary evidence. Theodulf's poems, his statutes, the Germigny mosaic, and the Libri Carolini remain the chief witnesses to a career that joined Visigothic learning to the political and religious ambitions of the Carolingian court.
