Biography

Short Description

The name Theodulus (Greek Theodoulos, servant of God) was borne by more than one early Christian martyr and later ascetic, and the bare name does not identify a unique historical person. The figure for whom the Latin and Greek martyrological tradition is least thin is Theodulus the Reader of Thessalonica, commemorated together with the deacon Agathopodes. He is not recorded as a bishop, patriarch, or pope, and no reliable source gives his birth year, birthplace, parentage, marriage, or children. Later calendars also list other men of the same name on various days; those notices are even briefer and should not be merged with the Thessalonian lector.

According to the Roman Martyrology and the Greek synaxaria, Agathopodes was an elderly deacon of the church of Thessalonica and Theodulus a young lector. They were arrested for confessing the Christian faith and, in the traditional narrative, for refusing to surrender the sacred books. The acts place the trial before a governor named Faustinus in the reign of an emperor styled Maximian, most often understood as Galerius Maximianus during the Great Persecution in the East rather than Maximian Herculius in the West. After interrogation and torture they were condemned to drowning: stones were tied to their necks and they were cast into the sea. The same accounts say that the bodies were later washed ashore and given Christian burial, but they name no precise tomb that can be verified today.

The year of death is not fixed by a contemporary document. Martyrologies assign the passion to the time of Maximian, which points to the late third or early fourth century, often rounded in later handbooks to about 303, but that figure is conventional rather than demonstrated. Theodulus is remembered as a cleric in minor orders (a lector), not as a member of a later monastic religious order. His cult is that of an ancient martyr: it is already present in the early martyrologies of East and West and did not pass through a medieval or modern process of beatification or canonization by a named pontiff. The Roman Martyrology keeps the feast on 4 April; Byzantine usage commemorates the pair on 4 or 5 April.

Beyond this short, conventional passion story, almost nothing can be verified. Other saints called Theodulus appear in scattered entries (companions in group martyrdoms, occasional monastic or stylite figures in later Eastern calendars), but their lives are not securely documented and cannot be used to fill gaps in the Thessalonian notice. In the absence of a distinctive epithet, a see, or a stable modern identifier, the Thessalonian lector remains the least uncertain bearer of the name, and even in his case the surviving record is liturgical rather than biographical.
