Biography

Short Description

Theoleptos of Philadelphia was a Byzantine metropolitan bishop, monk, and spiritual writer of the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. He was born in Nicaea in Bithynia around the middle of the thirteenth century, when that city was the capital of the Empire of Nicaea or had only recently been restored to the Palaiologan Byzantine Empire. As a young man he entered monastic life and is associated with the monastery of Saint Auxentius on Mount Saint Auxentius near Chalcedon, a major monastic centre on the Asian shore of the Bosporus. He later adopted a more solitary way of life and became known for the practice of inner, hesychastic prayer. Surviving evidence does not record an exact birth year, and later notices that place his birth near 1250 are scholarly estimates rather than documented dates.

After Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos repudiated the Union of Lyons, Patriarch Gregory II of Constantinople (Gregory of Cyprus) appointed Theoleptos metropolitan of Philadelphia in Lydia in 1283 or 1284. He held that see until his death nearly four decades later. In the church politics of the Palaiologan restoration he was a firm opponent of the Arsenite schism, which had begun with the deposition of Patriarch Arsenios Autoreianos and long divided Byzantine clergy and laity. He upheld the legitimacy of the post-Arsenite patriarchs and the ecclesiastical settlement of the Palaiologoi, while remaining a strict defender of Orthodox doctrine against Latinizing unionism.

Philadelphia (in the Hermos valley of Lydia, corresponding to later Alaşehir) was by his episcopate an increasingly isolated Byzantine city as Turkish principalities overran western Asia Minor. It nevertheless remained a significant imperial stronghold for decades. Contemporary and later sources credit Theoleptos with an important role in sustaining the city’s resistance and in the pastoral care of a population under military pressure. His tenure therefore combined ordinary metropolitan duties—ordination, preaching, and diocesan administration—with those of a civic and moral leader on a threatened frontier.

Theoleptos is equally important as a spiritual father and author. He directed Irene-Eulogia Choumnaina, daughter of the statesman and scholar Nikephoros Choumnos and widow of the despot John Palaiologos. After her husband’s death she became a nun and founded the convent of Christ Philanthropos Soter in Constantinople; a substantial correspondence from Theoleptos to her survives and sets out his teaching on prayer, obedience, and the monastic life. His other works include monastic discourses, homilies, and a treatise on the hidden or inner activity of those who live in Christ, describing the guarding of the mind, the descent of the intellect into the heart, and the invocation of the name of Jesus. These texts place him among the immediate forerunners of the fourteenth-century hesychast movement later associated with Gregory Palamas.

Theoleptos died in Philadelphia in 1322, or at any rate about that year. His writings were copied in hesychast circles and remain a primary source for late Byzantine spirituality and for the history of Philadelphia in the Palaiologan period. Later Orthodox tradition has in some places regarded him as a saint, but a universally observed feast day is not firmly established in the principal synaxaria, and details of any formal glorification are poorly documented.
