Biography

Short Description

Jean-Théophane Vénard was born on 21 November 1829 at Saint-Loup-sur-Thouet in the Deux-Sèvres, in western France, the son of a village schoolmaster. He lost his mother in childhood and remained closely attached to his father and to his sister Mélanie, to whom he later wrote some of his most revealing letters. Drawn early to the priesthood and to missionary work, he studied at the college of Doué-la-Fontaine and in the seminaries of the diocese of Poitiers before entering the seminary of the Paris Foreign Missions Society (Société des Missions Étrangères de Paris) in 1852. He was ordained a priest on 5 June 1854 and left France for the Far East that September.

After a period in Hong Kong spent preparing for the language and conditions of the mission, he was assigned to western Tonkin (northern Vietnam) and arrived there in 1856. He entered a Church already under severe legal prohibition. Emperor Tự Đức’s edicts against Christianity made the public exercise of the faith a capital offense, and European missionaries lived in hiding, moving among Catholic villages, celebrating the sacraments in secret, and depending on Vietnamese catechists and families for shelter. Vénard learned Vietnamese, ministered to scattered communities in the Red River delta, and continued to write home with a distinctive mixture of missionary seriousness and almost childlike cheerfulness that later readers found striking.

In late 1860 he was betrayed, arrested, and taken to Hanoi, where he was confined for months in a wooden cage. From prison he wrote again to his father and sister, describing his situation without bitterness and treating the prospect of death as a longed-for meeting with God rather than a tragedy. On 2 February 1861 he was beheaded at Ô Cầu Giấy, on the outskirts of Hanoi. He was thirty-one. His body was thrown into the river; Christians later recovered his head, and relics were subsequently distributed, including to the Paris Foreign Missions Society.

Vénard was beatified on 2 May 1909 by Pope Pius X among a group of Tonkinese martyrs, and canonized on 19 June 1988 by Pope John Paul II as one of the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam (Andrew Dũng-Lạc and Companions). His prison letters and the simplicity of his recorded character had a particular afterlife in France: Saint Thérèse of Lisieux read his life with intense sympathy, recognized in him a kindred youthful and joyful spirit, and helped to spread his reputation. He is commemorated on 2 February, the anniversary of his death, and also with the Vietnamese martyrs on 24 November.
