Biography

Short Description

Theophanes, known as “the Branded” (Greek: Graptos) and also as Theophanes of Nicaea, was a Palestinian monk, priest, hymnographer, and bishop of the ninth century, honoured as a confessor during the second period of Byzantine Iconoclasm. Traditional accounts place his birth in 775 in Palestine. His father is named Jonah. Together with his elder brother Theodore, later likewise called “the Branded,” he received a thorough education in Scripture and in the secular learning of the age. The brothers entered the Lavra of Saint Sabas (Mar Saba) in the Judean desert, where they were tonsured as monks in the Palestinian monastic tradition. Theophanes was later ordained to the priesthood. At Mar Saba they became known for learning and for firm attachment to the veneration of icons.

In the early ninth century Theophanes and Theodore, together with Michael the Synkellos, were sent from Jerusalem to Constantinople. Their purpose was to represent the Church of Jerusalem and to defend Orthodox teaching on the holy icons at a time when the iconoclast emperor Leo V the Armenian (813–820) had renewed the imperial prohibition of images. They refused to accept iconoclast doctrine and suffered imprisonment, beating, and exile. Persecution continued under subsequent iconoclast rulers and reached its most famous episode under Emperor Theophilus (829–842). Brought again before the emperor, the brothers persisted in their confession. Theophilus ordered that mocking iambic verses be incised or branded upon their faces, denouncing them as impious vessels come from Jerusalem. From this punishment they received the epithet Graptoi, “the Inscribed” or “the Branded.” They were then confined and sent into further exile, including association in the sources with the island of Aphousia in the Propontis.

After Theophilus died in 842, the empress Theodora and the young Michael III presided over the restoration of icon veneration, culminating in the Triumph of Orthodoxy in 843. Theodore had already died in exile. Theophanes was appointed metropolitan of Nicaea in Bithynia. In that office he continued the work of a liturgical poet. He is counted among the notable Byzantine hymnographers of the ninth century; numerous canons and other hymns in the Orthodox service books are attributed to him, and he helped to shape the poetic commemoration of saints and feasts in the Byzantine rite. He is also credited with a canon in honour of his brother Theodore.

Theophanes died in 845, according to the traditional date, while metropolitan of Nicaea. The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates him on 11 October as confessor, hymnographer, and bishop of Nicaea; he is likewise remembered in the Roman Martyrology. His cult is that of a confessor of the icons and a maker of liturgical song, rather than of a saint later given a large dossier of specific local or occupational patronages. Surviving detail about his inner life and about the exact place of burial is limited, and the precise year of birth is a conventional figure found in later reference works rather than a date secured by a contemporary record.
