Biography

Short Description

Theophilus of Adana, also known in later devotion as Theophilus the Penitent, is a sixth-century clerical figure associated with the church of Adana in Cilicia, in the eastern provinces of the Byzantine Empire (in what is now southern Turkey). The principal narrative of his life is a Greek hagiographical account attributed to a certain Eutychianus, who presents himself as a member of the Adana clergy and as a disciple of Theophilus. According to that account, Theophilus served as archdeacon and as oeconomus, or steward, of the church of Adana, a post that combined liturgical standing with substantial administrative and financial responsibility. When the bishop of Adana died, clergy and people are said to have wished to raise Theophilus to the episcopal see, but he declined out of humility. A new bishop was appointed in his stead, and, under the influence of jealous members of the local clergy, that bishop deprived Theophilus of the office of oeconomus. The resulting sense of injury and despair is the turning point of the legend.

In his distress Theophilus is said to have consulted a Jewish magician or sorcerer in the city, who conducted him by night to a gathering at which the Devil and his attendants appeared. There Theophilus formally renounced Christ and the Virgin Mary and signed a written pact, often described in later retellings as executed in his own blood, by which he bound himself to the Devil in exchange for restoration to office and still greater honor. The Devil then caused the bishop to reinstate Theophilus, who thereafter enjoyed high standing in the church of Adana. After a period of apparent success, Theophilus was seized with remorse. He undertook a severe penitential discipline of fasting, vigil, and prayer, and for forty days he implored the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The legend relates that the Virgin appeared to him, first rebuking him for his apostasy and then, after his persistence, obtaining his pardon from her Son. She subsequently restored to him the charter of the diabolical pact.

Theophilus then made a public confession before the bishop and the assembled church, produced the recovered document, and burned it. He received Holy Communion and, according to the traditional conclusion of the story, died shortly afterward in a state of repentance; some versions specify that he died three days after the public recantation. The date of death commonly given in martyrologies and later reference works is about 538, but that figure belongs to the legendary cycle itself and is not independently confirmed by contemporary non-hagiographical sources. Details of his birth, family, and place of burial are not preserved. He is presented as a member of the secular clergy of Adana rather than as a monk of a named religious order, and the sources do not record a spouse or children. He was neither pope nor patriarch.

The Greek narrative was translated into Latin, most influentially by Paul the Deacon in the eighth century, and the legend of Theophilus spread widely through Western Europe. It was recast in Latin verse, in vernacular languages, and in liturgical and miracle plays, and it occupied a prominent place in medieval collections of miracles of the Virgin. Because the story turns on Mary’s recovery of a written pact with the Devil, it became an important vehicle of Marian devotion. In later centuries it was recognized as a major precursor of the Faust tradition, in which a learned man likewise contracts with the Devil and later seeks deliverance. Veneration of Theophilus as a saint is attested in medieval calendars and martyrologies in both East and West; his feast has commonly been observed on 4 February. Modern historical scholarship generally treats the account as a pious legend rather than as a strictly verifiable biography, since no independent sixth-century documentation of the man survives outside the hagiographical tradition that bears his name.
