Biography

Short Description

Theophilus the Myroblyte, also called Theophilus of Kafsokalyvia or Theophilos the Myrrh-gusher, was an Eastern Orthodox hieromonk and hermit of Mount Athos, known chiefly from Athonite monastic tradition and later Orthodox synaxaria rather than from a large body of contemporary archival records. According to those liturgical sources he was born in the village of Ziri in the Kastoria region of Macedonia, in the later fifteenth century. From youth he was described as pious and drawn to sacred learning and the services of the Church. In early adulthood he left his native district for the monastic republic of Mount Athos, then living under Ottoman overlordship but retaining its ancient self-governing character.

On Athos he received the monastic tonsure at the Monastery of Iviron and was later ordained priest. Seeking a stricter and more hidden life, he withdrew from the coenobium to the remote skete of Kafsokalyvia (Kapsokalyvia) on the southern slopes of the Holy Mountain, a settlement of hermits long associated with poverty and solitude. There he lived in a simple cell, practicing fasting, vigil, and the Jesus Prayer in the hesychast tradition. Surviving accounts stress his humility, his refusal of higher office, and his work as a copyist of liturgical and spiritual manuscripts, a typical labor of educated Athonite monks of the period. He is presented as a model of hidden sanctity rather than as a public wonderworker in his lifetime.

He reposed in 1548. After his death, according to the tradition of the skete and the church calendars, his relics were found to stream fragrant myrrh, which is the origin of the epithet Myroblyte (myrrh-gusher). His memory is kept in the Eastern Orthodox Church on 8 July. Veneration remained largely monastic and liturgical; he was not the subject of a Western-style papal canonization, and he is not widely recorded as patron of particular cities, trades, or illnesses. Beyond the outline preserved in the synaxarion, many personal details of his life are unknown, and no extensive contemporary vita comparable to those of more famous Athonite saints has been securely identified.
