Biography

Short Description

Saint Theopista (also called Theopiste or Theospita) is known from the medieval Christian legend of Saint Eustace, a narrative that circulated in Greek and Latin from the early Middle Ages onward. In that account she is the wife of a Roman commander originally named Placidus, said to have served under the emperor Trajan. After a hunting vision of a crucifix between a stag’s antlers, Placidus, his wife, and their two sons were baptized; they received the names Eustace, Theopista, Agapius, and Theopistus. The story places the household in Rome in the early second century, but no contemporary Roman source corroborates the family or the events.

The legend then subjects the family to a series of Job-like trials. They lose their property; Theopista is separated from her husband and carried off by a shipmaster; the two boys are seized by a wolf and a lion. After years of isolation the members of the family are miraculously reunited. Eustace is restored to command and wins a victory, after which the emperor (Hadrian in the later recensions) discovers they are Christians and orders their death. Beasts refuse to harm them; they are finally killed by being roasted inside a bronze bull. The entire plot employs folkloric and romance motifs attested in other late-antique and even non-Christian literatures, and modern historians treat it as pious fiction rather than history.

Despite the legendary character of the passio, the cult of Eustace, Theopista, and their sons is historically well attested from the early medieval period. They appear in Eastern and Western martyrologies and are commemorated together on 20 September. A church dedicated to Saint Eustace existed in Rome by the early Middle Ages; the Golden Legend and countless works of art spread the story throughout Latin Christendom. Eustace himself entered the group of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and became a patron of hunters, but no independent, reliably documented patronages attach specifically to Theopista.

No verifiable year of birth or death, place of origin, or burial site can be established for her. She is presented in the tradition as a married woman and mother who shared her husband’s conversion and martyrdom. The narrative functioned as an exemplum of marital fidelity, parental love, and perseverance in faith amid extreme suffering. Beyond that hagiographical portrait, the historical Theopista, if any real person lies behind the name, remains unknown.
