Biography

Short Description

Theorigitha (also recorded in early sources as Torhtgyth, Torctgyd, or Theoritgitha) was a nun of the seventh century who lived in the double monastery of Barking, in the East Saxon kingdom in what is now Essex. Virtually all that is known of her derives from a short but detailed account in the Ecclesiastical History of the English People by the Venerable Bede, completed in 731. Barking Abbey had been founded in the 660s by Saint Earconwald, later bishop of London, as a house for his sister Saint Ethelburga, who became its first abbess. Theorigitha belonged to the first generation of women in that community.

Bede states that she was of noble birth and had served God for many years in perpetual virginity. She was a trusted helper of Abbess Ethelburga in the governance of the monastery, especially in instructing the younger nuns and upholding regular monastic discipline. He emphasizes her humility and sincerity of life. Approximately three years before Ethelburga’s death, Theorigitha received a vision at dawn: she beheld a body wrapped in a shroud being drawn upward toward heaven by cords of gold whose brightness surpassed that of the sun. The community later understood this apparition as a prophetic sign of the abbess’s approaching death and heavenly reward.

In the years after Ethelburga’s passing, Theorigitha herself was stricken with a wasting illness that lasted several years and left her limbs paralyzed, so that she retained the power of speech but could not move the rest of her body. During this prolonged suffering she remained in the monastery. Bede relates that she was granted a second vision in which the already departed Ethelburga appeared and summoned her by name. Theorigitha answered that she was coming, and within a few days she died. Her passing was regarded as a holy death, and she was thereafter remembered among the saints associated with Barking.

No contemporary source records the year of her birth or death, the names of her parents, or any events of her life before she entered the monastery. She received no papal canonization; like many early Anglo-Saxon monastic figures, her cult was local and rested on the authority of Bede’s narrative and the memory of the Barking community. Later medieval calendars sometimes assigned her a liturgical commemoration, but no feast date is given by Bede himself. Her story remains one of the few surviving glimpses of the inner life of a seventh-century English nunnery and of the spiritual bonds that united its members.
