Biography

Short Description

Saint Therapont of Belozersk, known in Russian as Ferapont Belozersky and also called Therapont of White Lake, was a monk and abbot of the Russian Orthodox Church whose life belongs to the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. Traditional hagiographical accounts state that he was born in 1337 in Volokolamsk, into a boyar family, and that his secular name was Feodor (Theodore) Poskochin. He entered the Simonov Monastery in Moscow, where he received the monastic tonsure and formed a lasting spiritual companionship with Saint Cyril of Belozersk. Simonov was at that time an important Muscovite monastery, and both men belonged to the generation of monks influenced by the hesychast and cenobitic currents associated with Saint Sergius of Radonezh and his disciples.

Around 1397 or 1398 Therapont and Cyril left Moscow for the remote northern region of Beloe Ozero, the White Lake. Cyril founded the large Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery. Therapont, desiring a quieter eremitical life, settled some fifteen to twenty kilometers away, by Lake Borodava, and established a small community dedicated to the Nativity of the Theotokos. This foundation, dated in the sources to 1398, became the Ferapontov Monastery. The two houses remained spiritually linked, and the White Lake region developed into a major center of northern Russian monasticism.

In the first decade of the fifteenth century Prince Andrei Dmitrievich of Mozhaisk, a son of Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy, invited Therapont to his lands. There, about 1408, Therapont founded another monastery of the Nativity of the Mother of God, the Luzhetsky Monastery near Mozhaisk, and served as its igumen. After some years he returned to his original northern hermitage. He died at the Ferapontov Monastery on 27 May 1426 and was buried there. Later generations venerated him as a wonderworker. The Russian Orthodox Church keeps his memory on 27 May and also on 27 December. The Ferapontov Monastery subsequently became famous for the early sixteenth-century frescoes of Dionisy in the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin; those paintings, and the monastery’s later status as a UNESCO World Heritage site, lie outside Therapont’s own lifetime but have kept his foundation in historical view.

Documentary evidence for Therapont’s life is limited and depends largely on later saints’ lives and monastic tradition rather than on contemporary charters. The outline given above—Muscovite tonsure, northern foundation with Cyril, Mozhaisk interlude, and death at Ferapontov in 1426—is the account preserved in the Orthodox hagiographical tradition and in standard reference works.
