Biography

Short Description

Tereza Margarida of the Heart of Mary, known in Portuguese as Tereza Margarida do Coração de Maria, was a Brazilian Discalced Carmelite nun whose life spanned most of the twentieth century and the opening years of the twenty-first. She was born Maria da Conceição on 5 March 1915 in Campanha, a municipality in the southern part of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Southern Minas Gerais was a region of long-standing Catholic parish culture, Marian devotion, and familiarity with religious congregations. Widely accessible historical sources give only limited, securely documented detail about her parents, siblings, schooling, or the inner chronology of her vocation, and those gaps should not be filled by conjecture. What is established is that she discerned a call to contemplative consecrated life and sought admission to the Discalced Carmelites rather than to an active congregation.

The Discalced Carmelite nuns follow the Teresian reform of the sixteenth century, with its emphasis on enclosure, the Liturgy of the Hours, mental prayer, poverty, and a community life ordered to friendship with God. That reform tradition had been planted in Brazil in the colonial period and saw further foundations in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as the Brazilian Church expanded. Tereza Margarida entered the Carmelite monastery of São José in São Paulo and received the religious name Tereza Margarida of the Heart of Mary. The name joined the memory of Thérèse of Lisieux, whose spirituality of spiritual childhood shaped twentieth-century Carmel, and of the eighteenth-century Florentine Carmelite Teresa Margaret of the Sacred Heart, together with the Marian piety, especially devotion to the Heart of Mary, that marked much Catholic life in her generation.

Inside the cloister she lived the ordinary hidden routine of a choir nun: liturgical prayer, cell, work, and community recreation under a prioress and the constitutions of the order. She is not associated in the public record with offices of wide external responsibility, published treatises, or travel, which is consistent with a strictly enclosed vocation. Testimonies later gathered in connection with a cause of beatification speak of humility, fidelity to religious observance, and a deep interior life centered on prayer and on the Heart of Mary. Such testimonies belong to a hagiographical process; they document a local reputation for holiness more securely than they independently verify extraordinary mystical claims. She belonged to a generation of Brazilian contemplative nuns who lived through the Catholic culture of the Vargas years, the Second Vatican Council, and the later renewals and crises of religious life in Latin America, while remaining within a traditional enclosed framework.

She died on 14 November 2005 at the age of ninety, after a long religious life spent with her Carmelite community in São Paulo. In the years after her death, steps were taken to introduce a canonical cause for beatification, and she has been referred to as a Servant of God. She has not been beatified or canonized, has no feast in the General Roman Calendar, and is not the formally declared patron of particular places, professions, or causes. Her memory is preserved chiefly among Discalced Carmelites and among Catholics in Brazil who follow local causes of servants of God. Precise dates of clothing and profession, internal offices, and the exact place of burial are not firmly established in the readily available English-language historical record, and those particulars are therefore left unset rather than guessed.
