Biography

Short Description

Theresa of Portugal, known in Portuguese as Teresa, was an infanta of the Kingdom of Portugal and, by marriage, queen consort of León. She was a daughter of King Sancho I of Portugal and Queen Dulce of Aragon, the latter a daughter of Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona, and Queen Petronilla of Aragon. Born in Portugal in the later twelfth century (dates in reliable accounts vary between 1176 and 1178), she belonged to the early generations of the Portuguese royal house established by Afonso Henriques. In 1191 she was married to Alfonso IX, King of León, in a match intended to bind Portugal and León. Alfonso was her first cousin, the son of Urraca of Portugal, a sister of Sancho I. The couple had three children: Sancha, Ferdinand (who died in 1214), and Dulce.

Because the spouses were related within degrees of kinship forbidden by canon law, the marriage met papal opposition. Pope Celestine III treated the union as invalid on grounds of consanguinity, and by the mid-1190s Theresa and Alfonso IX had separated. Alfonso later married Berengaria of Castile, a marriage likewise challenged for kinship. After the dissolution of her own marriage, Theresa returned to Portugal and took up residence at the monastery of Lorvão in the Mondego valley, in what is now the district of Coimbra. The house had been Benedictine; she caused it to be converted into a community of Cistercian nuns and herself adopted the Cistercian religious life, remaining closely associated with the convent for the rest of her life while still acting at times in a royal and familial capacity.

In 1230 Alfonso IX of León died, having sought to leave his kingdom to his daughters by Theresa, Sancha and Dulce, rather than to his son Ferdinand (the future Ferdinand III of Castile) by Berengaria. The resulting succession dispute threatened war between León and Castile. Theresa, together with Berengaria, played a decisive diplomatic role. By the agreement concluded at Benavente in December 1230, Sancha and Dulce renounced their claims to the Leonese crown in return for substantial lifetime revenues, and Ferdinand III succeeded in León, uniting the crowns of Castile and León. The settlement is often credited in part to Theresa’s willingness to restrain her daughters’ claims in the interest of peace.

Theresa spent her last two decades in religious retirement at Lorvão. She died there on 18 June 1250 and was buried in the monastic church. A cult developed at her tomb. In 1705 Pope Clement XI confirmed that cult, and she has since been venerated as Blessed Theresa of Portugal, with a feast observed on 17 June. She is remembered both as a Cistercian religious and as a queen whose political intervention helped to shape the dynastic map of thirteenth-century Iberia.
