Biography

Short Description

The subject is identified only as Thomas, with no surname, epithet, diocese, century, Wikidata identifier, or other disambiguating detail. In Christian hagiography and church history that name is extremely common. It comes from Aramaic Tōmā, “twin,” and is already the name of one of the Twelve Apostles in the New Testament. Later centuries produced many further saints, bishops, theologians, and martyrs called Thomas. Because this request supplies no further specification, no single person’s dates, places, offices, or cult can be verified as belonging to the subject. Assigning those facts would be a guess, which the historical method here forbids.

The figure most often meant when a hagiographer is asked simply for “Thomas” is the Apostle, also called Didymus. The canonical Gospels present him as one of the Twelve. In the Fourth Gospel he asks to see the risen Christ’s wounds before he will believe, then confesses “My Lord and my God.” Extra-biblical tradition, especially the Acts of Thomas and later Syriac and Indian Christian memory, associates him with a mission to the East and with martyrdom in India, commonly placed at Mylapore. His feast is kept on 3 July in the Roman calendar and on other dates in Eastern calendars; he is invoked as patron of India, of architects, and of those who struggle with doubt. None of that dossier can be treated as established for an unspecified “Thomas.”

Other widely venerated bearers of the name include Thomas of Canterbury (Becket), the archbishop murdered in 1170; Thomas Aquinas, the Dominican theologian who died in 1274; Thomas More, the English chancellor executed in 1535; and numerous lesser-known saints and blesseds such as Thomas of Villanova. Each has his own birth and death years, burial place, feast day, and patronages. There has been no Bishop of Rome of this name. Several Eastern churches have had patriarchs or catholicoi called Thomas, but none can be identified with the present subject.

In the absence of a reliable source that ties this query to one of those lives, the biographical fields required by the schema are left empty. The personal name is masculine in the cultures in which these saints appear. Whether the person was married, had children, belonged to a religious order, or held papal or patriarchal office cannot be stated. Patronages, canonization, and beatification likewise cannot be listed without first knowing which Thomas is intended. A full hagiographical notice requires an additional identifier—apostle, Aquinas, Becket, More, a place, or a century—so that the correct record can be compiled.
