Biography

Short Description

Thomas Belchiam was an English Observant Franciscan of the early sixteenth century, a member of the convent of Greenwich. The Observants, a reformed branch of the Order of Friars Minor distinguished by austerity of life and by preaching, had been planted in England under late Yorkist and early Tudor patronage. Greenwich was their principal house and stood in unusually close relation to the court: Henry VII and, for a time, Henry VIII favoured the community, and Queen Catherine of Aragon was notably devoted to it. Belchiam’s family, place of birth, and early formation are not recorded in surviving sources. He is known only as a friar of this Greenwich community in the years when the king’s marital cause and the subsequent royal claim to supremacy over the Church in England shattered that earlier patronage.

In the early 1530s the Greenwich Observants became among the most conspicuous clerical opponents of Henry VIII’s proceedings against Catherine of Aragon and of the statutes that transferred ecclesiastical authority to the Crown. When the Oath of Succession was tendered in 1534, Observant houses refused it. The Greenwich convent was suppressed and a number of its friars were imprisoned or dispersed. Belchiam is reported in Catholic encyclopedic and martyrological tradition to have composed a written work against the royal supremacy or against the divorce. That treatise is said to have come to the king’s notice and to have been the immediate cause of his confinement. The text itself has not survived, and the legal process against him is far more poorly documented than the well-known trials of John Fisher, Thomas More, or the London Carthusians.

He was held in Newgate Prison in London. According to the notice preserved in the Catholic Encyclopedia and in older recusant and Franciscan lists, he died there of starvation on 3 August 1537. He appears to have perished in custody rather than on the scaffold, which helps to explain why the archival trail is thin compared with those who were formally tried and executed. Later Catholic writers treated the death as a martyrdom for the doctrine of papal supremacy and for refusal to accept the king as supreme head of the Church in England. Hagiographical elaborations—lights seen in the cell, prophetic words after a book was burned—circulate in some older pious accounts but cannot be verified from independent contemporary record and should be treated with caution.

Little else can be established with confidence. No reliable contemporary evidence fixes a year of birth; later compilations that assign a date in the first decade of the sixteenth century are not grounded in a known baptismal or conventual entry. Belchiam was not included among the groups of English and Welsh martyrs beatified by Leo XIII or Pius XI, nor among those canonized in the twentieth century, so he has no official feast in the general Roman calendar and no authenticated patronages. His memory rests on brief notices in Franciscan necrologies, recusant catalogues of sufferers under Henry VIII, and standard reference works. The loss of Observant archives at the dissolution of the religious houses in England accounts for much of this obscurity. What remains is the outline of a Greenwich Observant who opposed the royal supremacy, was imprisoned in Newgate, and died there in 1537.
