Biography

Short Description

Thomas Choe Yang-eop, known in Korean as Choe Yang-eop and by the baptismal name Thomas, was a Roman Catholic priest of nineteenth-century Korea and the second Korean national to be ordained to the priesthood, after Andrew Kim Taegon. He was born on 1 March 1821 in Joseon Korea, in a generation when the Catholic Church—introduced in the late eighteenth century by Korean lay scholars and later served by French missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society—was banned by the state and repeatedly struck by official persecutions. Catholic households lived with the standing risk of arrest, torture, confiscation, and execution. In 1836 the apostolic vicar Bishop Laurent Imbert selected three Korean boys to be sent secretly abroad for seminary training, hoping to form a native clergy that might endure even if foreign missionaries were expelled or killed. Choe was one of the three, together with Andrew Kim Taegon, later Korea’s first priest and a martyr, and Choi Bang-je, who died during the years of study outside the country.

The youths left Korea in secret and reached Macau, then a principal base of Catholic missions in East Asia. There they received instruction in Latin, the humanities, philosophy, and theology within the educational network of the Paris Foreign Missions Society. Kim Taegon finished first and was ordained in 1845; he returned to Korea and was executed in 1846 in a renewed wave of persecution. Choe continued his course and was ordained a priest in 1849. He then re-entered Korea, where Christianity remained a capital offense, and began a ministry of a little more than a decade among believers who had taken refuge in remote villages and mountain districts.

As a priest he traveled constantly, often on foot and in disguise, celebrating Mass in secret, hearing confessions, baptizing, and instructing catechumens. The Catholic population of the time was largely rural and poor, gathered in hidden settlements to avoid detection, and the distances between communities were great. The work was physically punishing: roads were rough, shelter uncertain, and the danger of betrayal or police raids ever present. Between journeys he wrote a series of letters in Latin to former professors and missionary correspondents. Those letters, which survive as an important documentary corpus, describe Korean landscape, climate, social conditions, language, and the state of the Catholic communities, and they remain among the few extended firsthand accounts composed by a Korean Catholic of that generation with a classical missionary education.

Worn down by incessant travel, deprivation, and illness, Thomas Choe Yang-eop died on 15 June 1861, at the age of forty. Because he died of sickness rather than execution, he is not numbered among the Korean martyrs canonized in 1984 or among later groups of beatified Korean martyrs. His memory has nonetheless been honored in the Korean Church as that of a pioneering native priest who spent himself for scattered, clandestine congregations in an age of persecution. In more recent decades the Catholic Church in Korea has promoted a cause for his beatification, presenting him as a model of priestly zeal rather than of martyrdom. He had not been beatified or canonized in the commonly available historical record, and he is not associated with a universal feast day or with a list of official patronages.
