Biography

Short Description

Thomas Đinh Viết Dụ was a Vietnamese priest of the Order of Preachers who died as a martyr during the anti-Christian persecutions of the Nguyễn dynasty in the nineteenth century. He was born in 1783 in the village of Trung Linh, in the Phú Nhai area of Nam Định province in northern Vietnam, then part of the realm often called Tonkin or Đàng Ngoài. Nam Định was among the earliest and most densely Catholic regions of the country, with Dominican missionaries active there from the seventeenth century. Đinh Viết Dụ entered the Dominican Order, which had long staffed the vicariates of Eastern Tonkin, and was ordained a priest. He exercised his ministry among local Catholic communities at a time when imperial policy toward Christianity was hardening.

Emperor Minh Mạng, who reigned from 1820 to 1841, issued edicts that treated Christianity as a heterodox and politically subversive teaching. Churches were to be destroyed, European missionaries expelled or executed, and Vietnamese clergy and laity compelled to recant, often by publicly trampling a crucifix. Failure to apostatize could bring imprisonment, torture, and death. In this climate Dominican and other priests continued to serve in hiding, celebrating the sacraments and encouraging the faithful. Father Thomas was arrested in 1839. Contemporary accounts of Vietnamese martyrs typically record that captured priests were interrogated, pressed to deny the faith, and, if they refused, sentenced under the imperial code.

On 21 November 1839 Thomas Đinh Viết Dụ was beheaded at the execution ground known as Bảy Mẫu in Hải Dương. He was in his mid-fifties. His death formed part of a larger wave of executions of clergy and lay Catholics in Tonkin during the late 1830s. Surviving details of his interrogation and last words are sparse, as is common for many of the Vietnamese martyrs whose lives are known chiefly from official sentences, missionary reports, and later local tradition rather than from extensive contemporary biographies.

Pope Leo XIII beatified him on 27 May 1900 together with a large group of Vietnamese martyrs. On 19 June 1988 Pope John Paul II canonized one hundred seventeen Martyrs of Vietnam, including Thomas Đinh Viết Dụ, in a ceremony in Rome. The group is commemorated in the General Roman Calendar on 24 November. Individual patronage is not prominently recorded for him; he is honored as one of the Martyrs of Vietnam. Historical sources do not preserve a detailed account of his childhood, family, or the exact date of his ordination, and some later compilations treat birth years for Vietnamese martyrs of this period as approximate.
