Biography

Short Description

Thomas of Maurienne, known in Italian as Tommaso di Maurienne and sometimes called Thomas of Farfa, was a monk of Alpine origin who, according to the medieval tradition of the Abbey of Farfa, restored monastic life at Farfa in Sabina and served as its first abbot in the early eighth century. Virtually all narrative detail about him derives from the Chronicon Farfense of Gregory of Catino, a monk of Farfa who wrote in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries, together with related Farfa cartularies and abbatial lists. No contemporary eighth-century biography survives, and the year of Thomas's birth is unknown. Gregory presents him as a native of Maurienne, the Alpine valley whose chief centre is Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, in territory that in his lifetime formed part of the Burgundian-Frankish world and that now lies in south-eastern France. The chronicle states that Thomas went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem and remained in the Holy Land for three years. After his return he came to Rome.

The Farfa foundation legend continues that the Virgin Mary appeared to Thomas and instructed him to restore a ruined church and monastery dedicated to her at Farfa, in the Sabine countryside north-east of Rome. An earlier religious house on the site was attributed in later tradition to a sixth-century founder, Laurence of Syria; that community was said to have been destroyed during the Lombard invasions. Pope John VII, who occupied the Roman see from 705 to 707, is reported to have approved Thomas's mission. Thomas then assembled companions, re-established the monastery under the Rule of Saint Benedict, and governed it as abbot. Historians generally accept that Farfa was refounded in the first years of the eighth century by an abbot named Thomas, while regarding the visionary framing and some chronological claims as products of later monastic storytelling. Surviving original charters from Thomas's own abbacy are not extant; the earliest securely dated Farfa documents belong to subsequent decades.

Farfa stood in a border region between the Roman duchy, the Lombard Duchy of Spoleto, and other Lombard lands. In the generations after Thomas the abbey accumulated a great landed estate in the Sabina and became a major ecclesiastical principality, later placing itself under Carolingian protection and enjoying the status of an imperial abbey. Those later fortunes, including privileges associated with subsequent abbots and later conflicts with the Roman see and with local nobility, lie after Thomas's time. Farfa tradition names Aunepert as Thomas's successor in the abbatial office. The date of Thomas's death is not fixed by any contemporary record. Monastic tradition commonly assigns it to about the year 720, and he is believed to have died at Farfa and to have been buried at the abbey he had restored.

Thomas was venerated as a saint in the local and Benedictine cult of Farfa. A feast on 10 December appears in some calendars associated with the abbey and with regional devotion. He did not receive a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type, and his cult remained essentially monastic and local. He held no episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office. The sources describe him as a pilgrim and Benedictine monk and give no indication of marriage or children. Because the written portrait of Thomas was shaped so long after his death, many personal details cannot be verified, but his place as the refounder and first abbot of Farfa is the consistent core of the historical tradition.
