Biography

Short Description

Palackal Thoma, also known as Thomas Palackal or Palackal Thoma Malpan, was a priest of the Syro-Malabar Church and a co-founder of the first indigenous Catholic religious congregation for men in India. He was born in 1780 at Pallippuram, near Cherthala in the Alappuzha region of Kerala, then within the Kingdom of Travancore, into the Palackal family of the Saint Thomas Christian community. That community followed the East Syriac liturgical tradition and traced its Christian origins to the apostle Thomas. Ordained to the priesthood, he became known by the honorific Malpan, a Syriac title for a teacher of sacred language and theology. He taught Syriac and the liturgical sciences and was closely associated with clerical formation at Pallippuram, which he developed as a center for training priests for the Syro-Malabar Church.

In the early nineteenth century Palackal Thoma, together with his fellow priest Thomas Porukara and their disciple Kuriakose Elias Chavara, sought to establish a native religious community for the St. Thomas Christians. Until that time the Syro-Malabar Church had no indigenous religious order of its own. With the approval of the ecclesiastical authorities of the Vicariate of Verapoly, a religious house was founded at Mannanam in 1831. The original community was known as the Servants of Mary Immaculate. Palackal Thoma was the senior founder and a principal spiritual guide of the undertaking, while much of the later organizational work fell to Chavara after Palackal’s death. The congregation was subsequently affiliated to the Carmelite tradition and became known as the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI).

Palackal Thoma was regarded as a scholar of the Syriac language and of the East Syriac liturgical heritage, at a period when that tradition was under pressure from Latinizing influences and from the jurisdictional disputes between Padroado and Propaganda Fide authorities in Kerala. He emphasized priestly formation, the study of Syriac, and a more regular common life among the clergy. He remained based largely at Pallippuram, where he continued to direct seminary training, even as the new religious house developed at Mannanam. He lived as a celibate priest-teacher rather than as a married parish clergyman, consistent with his role as malpan and as founder of a religious congregation.

He died on 16 January 1841 at Pallippuram. He did not live to see the full canonical development of the congregation he had helped to found, nor its later Carmelite affiliation. Among the three founders, Kuriakose Elias Chavara was later canonized by the Catholic Church; Palackal Thoma himself has not been beatified or canonized. He is remembered in the Syro-Malabar Church and especially within the CMI congregation as a pioneer of indigenous religious life in India and as a teacher who helped preserve the Syriac Christian intellectual tradition of Kerala in the first half of the nineteenth century.
