Biography

Thomas Shen Jihe was a Chinese Catholic seminarian of the late Qing period who was put to death at Taiyuan in Shanxi province during the Boxer Uprising. He is numbered among the Martyr Saints of China, the group of one hundred twenty Catholics of Chinese and European origin canonized together in 2000. Almost nothing has been preserved about his family, the precise place or year of his birth, or the course of his studies. Surviving notices identify him by his Christian name Thomas, by his Chinese name, and by his status as a student for the priesthood in the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Shanxi, a territory long committed to the pastoral care of the Order of Friars Minor. In the late nineteenth century that vicariate maintained a seminary in which native candidates were trained alongside the Franciscan missionaries who staffed the mission.

The crisis that ended his life formed part of the wider anti-Christian and anti-foreign violence of 1900. In Shanxi the provincial governor Yuxian pursued a harsh policy toward missionaries and converts. On 9 July 1900 Bishop Gregorio Grassi, coadjutor Bishop Francesco Fogolla, several Franciscan priests and a lay brother, seven sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, and a number of Chinese seminarians and lay Catholics were assembled, taken to the governor’s yamen in Taiyuan, and killed. Catholic tradition holds that they were given an opportunity to renounce the faith and that they refused. Thomas Shen Jihe died with the other Chinese seminarians in that massacre, an episode often called the Taiyuan massacre and one of the better-documented events of the Boxer period in Catholic hagiography.

The victims of 9 July 1900 were beatified as a group by Pope Pius XII on 24 November 1946. On 1 October 2000 Pope John Paul II canonized them together with other martyrs of China spanning the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries. The liturgical memorial of the Martyr Saints of China is kept on 9 July. Thomas Shen Jihe is therefore venerated as a saint of the Catholic Church, though he has no widely attested individual patronages distinct from the collective memory of that group.

Because the historical record for most of the Chinese seminarians is thin, accounts of Shen Jihe remain general rather than personal. He stands as a representative of the first generations of native clergy in formation in Shanxi who shared the fate of their missionary bishops when the Boxer movement and official persecution converged in the summer of 1900. Later Catholic writing commemorates him among the Chinese who died for the faith at Taiyuan rather than as the subject of a separate, detailed vita.
