Biography

Short Description

The Thomasian Martyrs are a collective of Roman Catholic saints and blesseds associated with the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, the Dominican university founded in 1611 and the oldest extant university in Asia. They were priests, religious brothers, professors, students, and lay members of the Dominican family who were put to death for the Christian faith in Japan, Vietnam, and China between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. The name Thomasian refers to their institutional connection with Santo Tomas rather than to a single life: they were born in Spain, France, Italy, Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines, and elsewhere, and they died under different persecutions. Most belonged to the Order of Preachers as priests or cooperator brothers; a smaller number, including the Filipino protomartyr Lorenzo Ruiz, were Dominican tertiaries or lay companions of the missions. Because they are a group, they have no single birth year, death year, city of origin, or tomb.

The earliest and best-documented cluster suffered in Japan during the Tokugawa shogunate’s campaign against Christianity in the 1630s. Spanish, French, Italian, and Japanese Dominicans who had taught or studied in Manila entered the forbidden Japanese mission and were arrested, tortured, and executed, many at Nagasaki. Among those with a clear Santo Tomas connection were Domingo Ibáñez de Erquicia, a Basque Dominican who had taught at the university; Jacobo Kyushei Gorobioye Tomonaga, a Japanese priest formed in Manila; Guillaume Courtet (Thomas of Saint Dominic), a French theologian who had held a chair at Santo Tomas; Miguel de Aozaraza; Lucas Alonso of the Holy Spirit; Jordan Ansalone; Tomás Hioji Nishi; and several Japanese Dominican companions. With them died Lorenzo Ruiz, a Chinese-Filipino layman from Binondo, Manila, who had taken refuge with Dominican missionaries after a false accusation in the Philippines. He refused to apostatize under torture at Nagasaki in 1637 and is venerated as the first canonized saint of the Philippines. Pope John Paul II beatified Ruiz in Manila in 1981 and canonized him in Rome in 1987 together with fifteen companion martyrs of Japan.

A later group belongs to the persecutions of Christians in Tonkin and Annam. Vicente Liem de la Paz, born in northern Vietnam in the early eighteenth century, was sent to Manila, studied at the University of Santo Tomas, and became the first Vietnamese to be ordained a Dominican priest. Returning to his homeland, he was imprisoned and beheaded in 1773. In the nineteenth century further Dominicans formed in or passing through Manila, including the Spaniard Pedro Almato, were executed in Vietnam; they are counted among the Vietnamese Martyrs canonized by John Paul II in 1988. Dominican missionaries of the Philippine province also worked in Fujian and other parts of China. Francisco Fernández de Capillas, often called the protomartyr of China (died 1648), and later eighteenth-century Dominicans such as Pedro Sanz and his companions, had formation or provincial ties to the Manila house and are sometimes included in Thomasian lists. Several of these Chinese mission martyrs were among those canonized in 2000.

Liturgical commemoration follows the separate entries of the Roman Martyrology rather than a single group feast: Lorenzo Ruiz and companions are kept on 28 September; the Vietnamese Martyrs on 24 November; Chinese martyrs on dates proper to each. The University of Santo Tomas honors the group with campus monuments and presents them as models of academic and missionary witness. Their history documents the early modern Dominican network that joined Iberian houses of study, the convents of Mexico and Manila, and the missions of East and Southeast Asia, and it remains a central part of the religious identity of Santo Tomas and of the Dominican Province of the Philippines. Individual biographies, birthplaces, and burial sites differ widely; only the shared Dominican-Manila formation and death for the faith bind the group together.
