Biography

Short Description

Thorfinn of Hamar (Old Norse Þórfinnr; Norwegian Torfinn) was a thirteenth-century Norwegian bishop of the ancient Diocese of Hamar who is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church. Almost nothing can be established about his birth, family, or education. Later writers have sometimes placed his origins in the Trøndelag region and described him as a canon of Nidaros Cathedral at Trondheim, but these details rest on later tradition rather than on surviving contemporary records, and his year of birth is unknown. He enters the historical record as Bishop of Hamar by about 1278, in the closing years of the reign of King Magnus VI of Norway. Hamar, on Lake Mjøsa in what is now Innlandet, had been an episcopal see since the mid-twelfth century; Thorfinn thus belonged to the second century of that diocese’s existence, at a time when the Norwegian Church was still defining its liberties against the Crown.

In 1277 he was among the prelates associated with the settlement known as the Concordat of Tønsberg (Sættargjerden i Tønsberg), concluded between King Magnus VI and Jon Raude, Archbishop of Nidaros. That agreement confirmed important ecclesiastical privileges, including a measure of freedom in episcopal elections and recognition of the Church’s jurisdictional and economic rights. Thorfinn’s role is that of a signatory or supporting bishop rather than of a principal negotiator; the episode nonetheless situates him firmly in the Norwegian episcopate that sought to stabilize church–state relations on terms favourable to the hierarchy. Magnus VI, often remembered as a legislator, died in 1280. The minority of his son Eric II, and the regency that governed in the young king’s name, adopted a harder line. Royal officers moved to recover rights and revenues that the Tønsberg settlement had assigned to the Church, and conflict followed.

Thorfinn, together with Archbishop Jon Raude and other bishops, resisted the post-1280 reaction. The Crown confiscated church property and put severe pressure on the higher clergy. Jon Raude was driven into exile and died in 1282. Thorfinn likewise left Norway. He took refuge not in another Scandinavian see but at the Cistercian abbey of Ter Doest (Ter Doest, Terdoest) at Lissewege, near Bruges in the County of Flanders. Medieval Norwegian prelates sometimes used Flemish and other continental houses as places of study, diplomacy, or asylum; Ter Doest was a well-established Cistercian community on the coastal plain of Flanders. There is no secure evidence that Thorfinn himself had been a professed Cistercian before his exile; his connection with the order is that of a bishop guest who ended his life in a Cistercian cloister.

He fell ill and died at Ter Doest on 8 January 1285 and was buried at the abbey. The chief narrative source for his character is a Latin poem written by Walter de Muda, a monk of Ter Doest who had known him. The verses, which were placed over Thorfinn’s tomb, praise his gentleness, patience, generosity, and personal austerity, and present him as a man of peace rather than as a political combatant. No authentic writings by Thorfinn himself are known, and the administrative record of his years at Hamar is thin. What can be said with confidence is that he belonged to the Norwegian bench in the last quarter of the thirteenth century, that he stood with the archbishop of Nidaros in defence of the Tønsberg privileges, and that he died an exile in Flanders.

A local cult grew up around his tomb at Ter Doest. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later juridical type; his sanctity belongs to the older pattern of episcopal and monastic veneration grounded in reputation for holiness and in a tomb cult. His feast is kept on 8 January. In the early seventeenth century, when interest in the abbey’s past was revived, attention was again paid to his burial and to Walter’s poem, which helped preserve his name after the medieval Norwegian church had been swept away by the Reformation. Modern historical knowledge of Thorfinn remains limited: he is an obscure figure whose biography is recovered only in outline from a handful of Norwegian political notices and from the affectionate testimony of a Flemish monk.
